Review: Heavy Vol. 1 by Max Bemis, Eryk Donovan, & Adrian F. Wassel

Do you have a gory and hilarious comic book shaped hole in your life? What about one that’s full of alternate dimensions, purgatory, and a ton of nudity and blood? Than this might be something that you want to check out in the future.

Bill is a man who’s been forced into the role of an assassin, across too many dimensions to count. All because of his diseased wife’s ex, who’s psycho brain decided to murder them one night. He doesn’t want to hurt people, especially kill them, but he does what he does because he has to. They say he’ll eventually be able to make his way up to heaven to see his wife. That is, until everything changes, and he gets a new partner. The man that killed him.

This book is a wild ride from start to finish. Filled with murder, blood, gore, nudity, and lots of funny jokes just tossed in there, the bright colours that the art brings really livens up the story and makes it a joy to read. I think it fits perfectly. I couldn’t ask for more. The story itself was engaging, exciting, and just something I didn’t want to put down. I couldn’t get enough, and I can’t wait for the next volume, that’s for sure. At only 111 pages, it was a breeze to read through. I definitely recommend checking it out if you like any of those things.

Planet Paradise by Jesse Lonergan Review

Not really sure what I was getting myself into, Planet Paradise is a really cute graphic novel, for what the story really is. I loved the art, and really disliked everyone but the main character, but I think that’s the point. Short and sweet, I really enjoyed this book.

Following a person on their way to Planet Paradise with a whole slew of tourists who have also been put to sleep in chambers on a rocket, something goes wrong and it crashes down to a planet inhabited by vicious dinosaurs. They’re forced to fend for themselves and not only save their own life, but also those left alive, including a very unfriendly ship captain. But things aren’t what they seem once everything seems back on it’s way up for our hero.

There isn’t really much to say about this book, it was a nice and chill read despite the story content. I really feel for the main character, and I hope that their vacation goes better for them, as well as the rest of their life. If you’d like something short and unique to fill the gap in your reading list, than you should definitely think about checking this book out.

The Dreaming Tree by Matthew Mather Review

On the outside, this book seems exciting. After being decapitated in a car accident, Roy is now one of the world’s first full body transplant patients. This means that his head has literally been grafted onto someone else’s body. His life is now wave after wave of phantom pain, and is filled with someone else’s body odour. Well that and walking blackouts.

Unfortunately this is just something that wasn’t for me. Even though the story was gory and mysterious, I felt like I just wasn’t into it by the end. It starts out like any other scary transplant story, meaning the patient starts to take on characteristics from the person that gave them the organ or body or whatever, but just ended up being a little too predictable. I liked the family drama, I didn’t really expect that to be in this book.

I thought that even though officer Delta Devlin had a really cool name, her side of the story wasn’t very memorable until the end. Overall, I can see this being a popular novel, but like I said before, it’s just not for me. I hoped it would be, and I thought it was interesting, but this isn’t my new favourite book. I do like the cover though.

Exorsisters Volume 1 by Ian Boothby, Gisèle Lagacé, Taylor Esposito & Pete Pantazis Review

5/5 Stars, 120 pages
Published April 23rd 2019 by Image Comics

Exorsisters Volume 1 is a hilarious and action packed graphic novel following the lives of two sisters, who deal with things that any normal sisters wouldn’t even dream of. After her mother sold her soul, Kate was never the same, but she adds a silly and gory twist to the story that her sister just doesn’t have. The art in this story is just so cute and colourful, yet crisp and gory at the same time. I couldn’t ask for more from this book.

The first issue begins with a wedding that ends in disaster. Glenn and Gloria thought that this would be their day, but really, it’s the day that Glenn is pulled away into hell by chains. This is when we meet the sisters, one of them chugs wine while they listen to the story that Gloria tells them. Apparently, she tried to call the police, and suddenly no one could remember what happened. They all said she got left at the alter.

From the second I started this book, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to put it down. What I didn’t expect, however, was for it to be as funny as it was. I loved every bit of it, and I need a paper copy for myself so that I’ll be able to read it whenever I want. If you need a new graphic novel to read, I highly recommend checking this one out.

And Then There Were Crows (Shades of Hell #1) by Alcy Leyva Review

And Then There Were Crows (Shades of Hell #1) by Alcy Leyva 3/5 Stars 280 pages Published July 3rd 2018 by Black Spot Books

Amanda Grey just wants to save her family home. Living in a small New York apartment, her parents not only left her alone, but left her an immense amount of money to watch the house while they’re gone. As a twenty something year old woman, this shouldn’t be a problem, after all she loves being by herself anyways. That is, until she gets months behind on the rent. That’s when things start to pile up on her. It becomes just another thing to worry about, after attacking her, a man disintegrates into crows before her eyes.

She then meets a demon, and an angelic being, and must go off of her adventure to save the world before the crows can spawn worse things around the city. Although I like the characters and the idea of the story, I just couldn’t keep my attention on it. The writing was great, I just think that they story wasn’t as attention grabbing as I originally thought it was going to be.

I did, however, like how gory the book was. For a young woman, she gets jumped a lot by demons, and in the first person viewpoint, she must defend herself using whatever means necessary to protect the planet, and humanity as a whole. I liked that there was kind of a cult aspect to it, alongside the angels and demons, but like I said, I just couldn’t get into it.

That being said, I do think it has the potential to have a lot of fans. Just because I didn’t love this book specifically doesn’t mean you won’t. If you think you’ll like it, definitely give it a try and check it out.

I Hate Fairyland Vol. 2 by Skottie Young, & Jean-Francois Beaulieu Review

I Hate Fairyland Vol. 2 by Skottie Young, & Jean-Francois Beaulieu 5/5 Stars 128 pages

“I Hate Fairyland Volume 2” picks up not far from where the last book ended. In the same style as the first volume, we now follow Gertrude as Queen of Fairyland, the exact opposite of what she wanted to do the most. After months of boring queen work, she’s desperate to find something fun to do, and may just be willing to lose her mind in the process.

When I finished the first volume, I couldn’t wait to see what happened in the next one, and picked it up right away. The art is the same as the last one, colourful and more gory than you could imagine. The characters, are just as impulsive, angry and hilarious as the first book, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

This one starts out with a pink teddy bear creature fighting a massive monster in an arena. Gertrude is the evil queen and owns everyone’s affection, life is good. That is, until she wakes up. After years of neglect and wars, the kingdom is trashed, and Gertrude isn’t the person she once was. A woman comes and tells her she’s fired, and she’s free to wander the land. Just like the last story, she’s still trying to figure out how to get out, but this time she’s searching for some kind of world jumping machine. She also meets a young boy named Duncan dressed in a dragon onesie.

Although I liked the first book more, I still really enjoyed this one, and if you liked it I would definitely recommend checking out the rest of the series. Just like the last review, I think if you love bright colourful artwork and exciting but hilarious stories full of murder and strange creatures, you’re going to love this.

I Hate Fairyland, Vol. 1: Madly Ever After (I Hate Fairyland #1) by Skottie Young, Jean-François Beaulieu, & Nate Piekos Review

I Hate Fairyland, Vol. 1: Madly Ever After (I Hate Fairyland #1) by Skottie Young, Jean-François Beaulieu, & Nate Piekos 5/5 Stars 128 pages

“I Hate Fairyland Vol. 1” is a story that starts out seemingly normal. The insides, however, are filled with bright colours, candy, strange creatures, and of course lots of blood and gore. It begins with an eight year old girl named Gertrude, who has green hair and a perfect pink life, wishing she would be taken away to an amazing world, not thinking her wish would actually come true. She’s then sucked into her carpet and dropped into exactly what she wished for, a place called Fairyland. She immediately regrets her decision, bleeding and bruised with a broken arm, and wants to go back home. They tell her if she can find the key, she can go home. She gets a small guide, and off she goes to find her way back.

I love the art in this book so much, not only is the story itself hilarious but the art is unlike anything I’ve read lately. Gertrude then spends the next twenty seven years looking for the key and her freedom, eating nothing but fairy food and sugar, and killing everything in her path. When another human girl shows up in Fairyland, the story turns into a race against the clock to find the key, before the other girl can trap the loser in the world forever. Gertrude’s body hasn’t changed a bit, but her mind has, and it’s

everything you could hope for it to be.

The characters in this book are not only hilarious but they’re so far from anything you’d know in real life that you can’t help but remember them for maybe longer than you should. I wasn’t expecting to love this book but I definitely did, and I’m glad I got the chance to read it. If you’re looking for an exciting and funny comic book full of murder and candy, this is for you.
