Book Birthday Review: Down World by Rebecca Phelps

5/5 Stars 368 pages
Published March 30th 2021 by Wattpad Books

If I had to describe this book in just a few words, they would be an instant hit. With an amazing and super in depth storyline, it’s perfect for anyone fourteen years and up, and quickly became one of my new favourite books even at twenty four. It’s just one of those books where every time I thought the story was coming to a pause or a good place to end, it ended up just being the beginning. And I just couldn’t get enough of it.

Following a young girl named Marina from her viewpoint in first person, she’s about to start grade ten in a small town in the United States. But after losing her brother to a train accident three years ago, her and her parents lives have become very grim and depressing. Blaming her brother’s best friend, they despise him, and Marina lost her only friend because of it. And now she’s starting at a new school. Could things get any worse? She probably would say no, but this is just the beginning of a much bigger and almost unbelievable picture. That is, if she didn’t see it for herself she wouldn’t believe it.

Originally an army base, the school is a labyrinth of twists and turns, and after getting lost on her first day, she meets a senior named Brady. He’s a nice and very cute boy who genuinely just wants to help her out, and even though she doesn’t see him again for about six months after her first day, she can’t stop thinking about him. After all, everyone else that she grew up with acts like they don’t know her. But when she finally sees him again, he’s harbouring a deep secret and a mysteriously hysterical girl. And after following them to the train station where her brother lost his life, she learns that the secret really involves things that she could never imagine were real; parallel universes.

Not only is the army base turned high school confusing and filled with doors that have been bricked over, but living in it’s basement is an Annihilation-like spiral staircase. And at the bottom are three doors, one each for yesterday, today, and tomorrow. But only the today one is accessible. And when Marina goes inside it, she finds her brother in the flesh, happy and thriving. That can’t be right, though, can it? He died. Little did I know, that this was just barely grazing the surface of what was really going to happen in this book.

This book is insanely in depth for how many pages it is. Jam packed with rich backstory, the characters really seem like they could be real people, despite the obvious differences between our world and theirs. Addicting and mysterious, I was pulled in from the second I started it, and I didn’t want to put it down for a second. It’s amazing without gore or romance, and I think that’s something that’s difficult to do sometimes. A perfect story in my eyes, I would be delighted to get this as a present, and it would make a really great addition to my bookshelf, with it’s breathtaking cover. I think even if you’re not super big into scifi, this is a really great story, and everyone should check it out and give it a chance to unravel itself. Even half way through the book I was thinking, this could be the end, right? But it wasn’t there was more, and more, and more. I’ll definitely be thinking about it for a long time.

Adventures and Books

Today I’m posting early because I’m leaving in an hour to go with my aunt to get her new dog! I’m excited, but it’s a long drive; almost three hours one way! So I’m here to talk about the book I’m going to read.

I’m working through Hummingbird Salamander by Jeff Vandermeer!

Out at the beginning of April, Hummingbird Salamander is from the author of Annihilation, a brilliant speculative thriller of dark conspiracy, endangered species, and the possible end of all things.

Security consultant “Jane Smith” receives an envelope with a key to a storage unit that holds a taxidermied hummingbird and clues leading her to a taxidermied salamander. Silvina, the dead woman who left the note, is a reputed ecoterrorist and the daughter of an Argentine industrialist. By taking the hummingbird from the storage unit, Jane sets in motion a series of events that quickly spin beyond her control.

Soon, Jane and her family are in danger, with few allies to help her make sense of the true scope of the peril. Is the only way to safety to follow in Silvina’s footsteps? Is it too late to stop? As she desperately seeks answers about why Silvina contacted her, time is running out—for her and possibly for the world.

Hummingbird Salamander is Jeff VanderMeer at his brilliant, cinematic best, wrapping profound questions about climate change, identity, and the world we live in into a tightly plotted thriller full of unexpected twists and elaborate conspiracy.

If you’d like a copy, you can pre-order here!

This book has a very interesting title, a breathtaking cover, and a very intriguing description, and I can’t wait to see what I’m getting myself into. I’m less than twenty percent done which isn’t great considering it comes out in like a week, so I’m hoping to make a pretty big dent on it! I loved Annihilation and that entire series, though I have yet to start the last book yet, I’m hoping I’ll like this just as much as that one, even though it’s very different.

What do you think about it? Would you check it out? Lets talk about it in the comments! Hope you’re doing well, and having a great day. I’m going to post my review after this and then rush eat and get ready to go because now I have about an hour to go before my ride is here!

Review: Vampire: The Masquerade Volume 1 by Tim Seeley, Tini Howard, Blake Howard, Adrian F. Wassel, Dev Pramanik, & Nathan C. Gooden

4/5 Stars 160 pages
Published March 16th 2021 by Vault Comics

With a beautifully dark and gothic artistic style, Vampire: The Masquerade Vol. 1 is a very interesting book about, you guessed it, vampires, and a game I’ve never played before.. These vampires, however, are a little different than the usual, being part of a secret society existing alongside our own, and anyone who dares cross them or reveal their secret is bound to be hunted down and killed in cold blood sooner or later. Perfect for the comic book readers that love a dark and grungy story full of blood and mysteries or anyone who has played the tabletop game.

Starting off right in the action, we see a vampire woman killing a human girl for finding out about her kind. Clearly, they will stop at nothing to hide their secret. Having fangs and drinking blood aren’t the only things that these vampires have though, because some can also use blood magic. But there’s an internal war going on in their society, threatening to split the city into two sections, Minneapolis, and the Minneapolis separatists. And that’s never good, especially for anyone caught in the middle. And to make things worse, there’s a group of killers mutilating and taking body parts from other vampires. And they’re unlike anything I could have imagined. I had a feeling from the beginning that this was going to be a very dark bloody book, and I was right. And I loved it.

Overall, this book was a great read and I really enjoyed getting to know more about everything going on. The characters all had real problems to deal with, other than being vampires, and I really enjoyed that, especially Cecily’s. I think she’s my favourite. I also really liked that there were character sheets to fill out in the back with tons of information for those sheets. It makes me want to try to play the game! If you like dark stories with tons of blood and mystery, and lots of points of view all weaved together, than I definitely recommend checking this out!

Good Moods, Questionable Books

Hey everyone! Hope you’re doing well today, I know I woke up in a really good mood and have already gotten a bunch of stuff done and it’s only 11am! Who am I? Anyways, I just was thinking about books, like always, and thought I would come on here and talk about my thoughts to break up the reviews a bit.

Photo by Juan Pablo Serrano Arenas on Pexels.com

You ever just in the mood to read but the book you’re reading just isn’t hitting right? Because sometimes I think, maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m just not into reading right now. But I still want to read, so I try to find something else. And that usually works for me. The problem being, that sometimes it’s a book with a review deadline, and I feel like I’m obligated to finish it before moving onto something else, even though that isn’t the case, and I do this for fun, because I don’t get paid. (Although I would love if that were the case).

Sometimes I just need to take a step back, move away from that book, and start something else. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Yes it’s hard to concentrate on multiple books at once, because sometimes I forget details, but like I’ve said in previous posts I started taking notes for them again, so that really isn’t a problem anymore. Does anyone else do this? I’d love to hear about your review process, if you even have one.

Thanks for reading! I’m so thankful for this blog. It really keeps my head level.

Review: Dryad Vol. 1 by Kurtis J. Wiebe, & Justin Osterling

Filled with beautiful art depicting beautiful people, this book starts out with a nasty diaper change in the middle of a forest. Who could have guessed? Not me, that’s for sure. After a long hard journey, Yale and Morgan find themselves and their twins in a beautiful green village. But things can’t stay peaceful forever, can they? This story is a great tale of doing what you have to do to protect the ones you love.

After a class trip to a local ruin outside their peaceful town, Yale and Morgan’s twins can’t get them out of their heads. They just have a feeling about them, and they’re determined to figure out what exactly that feeling is. But after making it back to there, their group is viciously attacked and kidnapped by guards from the city that their parents escaped from with only their lives and the clothes on their back. And after the guards realize that one of the teens is missing, they go on a savage hunt for them through the town. But after finding them, they realize that they don’t just want the twins, they want Yale and Morgan as well. And this leads them to a forced adventure back into the city, where they’re left fighting for their families lives against soldiers.

This story was really fun to read. The art style is almost relaxing, even though it’s depicting a lot of fighting and monsters and even switches at one point to super futuristic tech in the city. It’s books like these that are getting me more and more into the fantasy side of things, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out. I’d definitely recommend looking into it yourself, if you think it would be something you’d like. I’ll for sure keep an eye out for the second volume!

Third is Percivious Insomnia by J.J. & A.J. Cook!

An insomnia pandemic is sweeping the globe, leaving people unable to function and society on the brink of collapse…

Dr. Cooper Delaney believes he has the answer: Noctural, a new sleep-aid—one with absolutely no side-effects—which in early testing shows 100% effectiveness.

The only problem is, it doesn’t work. With no warning. No explanation.

Unable to accept the drug’s inexplicable failure and unwilling to concede to the competition, lines are crossed, ethical boundaries are pushed to the breaking point, and disturbing realizations come to light that could completely unravel civilization as we know it… and throw into question humanity’s place in the universe.

A jetset medical thriller meets sci-fi adventure with an unforgettable cast of characters, Percivious Insomnia presents an alternate history so compelling that it could possibly be true. The first book in the Percivious Trilogy from husband-wife author duo JJ Cook & AJ Cook, MD, Percivious Insomnia sets a unique and original course for fiction of the future, and paints a timely, prescient portrait of today’s globalized society… and what may exist beyond the realm of our current understanding.

Second last is X-Men Epic Collection Volume 3: The Sentinels Live by Roy Thomas, Gary Freidrich, Arnold Drake, Linda Fite, Don Heck, Werner Roth, George Tuska, and Jim Steranko!

Professor X is dead! The X-Men have gone their separate ways. Searching to find a way to make its poorest-selling super heroes click, Marvel was trying anything and everything. With the title on the verge of cancellation, Roy Thomas and Neal Adams clicked, and the rest is history. Their epic evolution of the X-Men defines the team to this day. Adams’ lavish and dynamic visuals and Thomas’ challenging and contemporary stories combined in a book that throbbed with the pulse of the times. Their iconic stories collected here introduce Havok, the vampiric villain Sauron, the Mutates and X-Man-to-be Sunfire! Not to mention the Living Pharaoh, a classic Savage Land team-up with Ka-Zar, as well as the return of Magneto!

And last but not least, Someday Comes Paradise by Gary Dean Thompson!

A desolate stretch of coastline. Dune grass scattered across miles of sand. Rusty barrels exposed in the retreating tide, and a lone dune buggy streaks along this coastal road, kicking up mud and slicing through waves of mosquitoes. Up ahead, a flashing signal light swings above a lonely intersection. This is the cross-roads to the middle of nowhere.

Sam Starr is a teenager on the run with his con-woman momma, Natalie. He has maybe done bad; she has definitely done worse. They’ve arrived on a barrier island, cast away from the world where they hope to be safe. But here, crime and corruption are thicker than the Costa Rican coffee and the sand flies. A local hero, Bannion, offers his protection and a home to mother and son; yet, all is not what it seems. The vagabond fry-cook, Gash, tries to guide the boy like a prophet in the dunes. The saving grace for young Sam comes in the elegance of a Vietnamese girl, Tu Ly – in whom he glimpses tenderness and salvation. Together, they must come of age amidst the drugs and deception. They elude the Navy bombs and free dive for starfish. They cling together in despair in a hideaway as they fall in love. But most of all, they want to find a little bit of Paradise, in this world or even beyond.

A charged, Southern saga, SOMEDAY COMES PARADISE exposes a world rarely seen, where violence mixes with country music while sharks bleed on the boat docks. Danger overshadows dreams. Nothing is black and white. It’s a desperate world inhabited by compelling characters with nothing to lose.

Set on the coast in South Texas, this graphic novel reveals a journey of troubled souls, with hell-fire-and-damnation all about. Yet for Sam, Tu Ly and Natalie, the flame of hope burns hot within their darkness and stands firm against the hurricane winds.

Review: Open-Hearted by Nicolas Keramidas

A beautiful true story of one man’s journey through his second heart surgery, wrapped up in a little ball with a ton of cute art and silly little things along the way. Something I’ve never really known anything about, I was intrigued to find this book, and couldn’t wait to start it. After all, it’s unlike anything I’ve read before. What I should have expected was how emotional it was, and it really taught me how hard it is on not only the person getting the surgery, but also on their friends and family. I’m really glad I got to check it out.

Nicolas Keramidas was just a man working at Disney, living his best life, until one day everything turned on its head. Born with four separate heart defects he had to have surgery as a baby, but he didn’t really think anything of it aside from his every two years check up. Even then, though, he never thought something would happen. And then something happened. He needed another surgery, and it was unlike anything he, or I, could have imagined. This book is a very detailed journal of the journey he took to fix his heart.

If you like true stories about real people with real problems, and you like comics and cute artwork, than this book may be perfect for you. It’s informative, detailed, and exactly what I needed to break up my usual reading. I highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance! It was a pretty quick read, and I finished it in under a couple hours with a break in the middle.

Thanks for reading! Hope you’re doing well and staying happy.

Does Anyone Else LIKE Taking Notes?

Photo by Judit Peter on Pexels.com

I don’t know if I’m in the minority or the majority here, but I’m a reader that likes to keep a notebook handy when I’m reading so that I can take notes and really keep track of what I’m reading. Not only does it allow me to write a more in depth review with all the things that I might have forgotten while working my way through the books, I feel like it’s just nice to look at too, and it allows me to not have to immediately write a review after I finish a book, in fear that I’ll forget all about it by the time I actually get around to it.

I don’t take notes for the whole book though, because I don’t like to post spoilers in my reviews. I only take notes for the first half of the book, and then leave the rest, and refer to it if I absolutely have to without giving any major details. There’s just something about a notebook full of very nicely written notes, though, that I really enjoy. That’s probably the only part of school I liked, too.

Anyways, I just thought I would post about it, because I’m really curious if any of my followers do the same. I hope you’re doing well and having a great day. I’ll be posting a review here right away, and I hope you enjoy it!

Book Birthday Review: The Fall Volume 1 by Jared Muralt

Looking for an insane story of the apocalypse due to a virus? Do you want to see kids really have to take things into their own hands in that kind of world? If so, this might be something you want to look into the next time you’re looking for a graphic novel to read. It really shows the gritty parts of a terrifying future fantasy, and that’s just what I love about reading comics. And who knows? You might too.

5/5 Stars 152 pages
Published March 23rd 2021 by Image Comics

This book follows a family, a single dad and his two kids. After losing their mother to a virus that sweeps the world and creates a kind of chaos that destroys society as we know it, they’re forced to leave their home, sacrifice their pet, and really fend for themselves not only out in the wilderness, but in a chaotic village full of nasty people. Willing to do what they need to survive, they also end up picking up a baby along the way, and then eventually more people. It really shows the hard parts of life, like trying to live again after losing someone that means so much to you.

I loved this story from the moment I picked it up, and honestly, I knew that I would. I’m just addicted to these kinds of post apocalyptic stories, they’re so interesting and exciting to me. Yes, some parts were hard to read and hurt my heart, but I pushed through and came out clean on the other side. The art work was also a very nice addition, and really matched the story, in my opinion. I couldn’t ask for anything more from it, and I can’t wait to see what happens after this book. It really captured everything perfectly.

Apocalyptic Books

There’s just something about a good apocalypse book that never disappoints me. Though it’s something that’s supposed to be horrific and terrifying, I’ve always found them really relaxing, and really easy to sink into, but I’m not sure if that says more about me or my mental state. I’m not sure what it is, whether it’s that people have to really work together to survive and make a family out of nothing, or if it’s just that there’s nothing to worry about other than just being alive, I can’t get enough of them.

That being said, I’m quickly depleting my stockpile of books based in an apocalypse. The last week especially, since I took a break to replenish my mental health and also my reviews, I’ve read probably four. That’s not looking great for me, since they’re really my self care genre, and I hardly ever find one that I don’t like. It’s not that I don’t like other books, obviously I do, reading everything that I read, I just really think that I can always fall back onto them when I’m feeling stressed out by other books.

Maybe it’s because I love apocalyptic video games and movies, maybe it’s because the world in general is just too much for me, but it’s not that I want our world to be destroyed, I just really find them fascinating. Does anyone else feel like this? Out of everything, I would say that and the futuristic cyber punk kind of stories are my top two favourite genres. Anyways, I just thought I would come on here and blab for a bit about the kinds of books I love.

Hope you’re having a great day and your mental health is good,
