Review: Heavy Vol. 1 by Max Bemis, Eryk Donovan, & Adrian F. Wassel

Do you have a gory and hilarious comic book shaped hole in your life? What about one that’s full of alternate dimensions, purgatory, and a ton of nudity and blood? Than this might be something that you want to check out in the future.

Bill is a man who’s been forced into the role of an assassin, across too many dimensions to count. All because of his diseased wife’s ex, who’s psycho brain decided to murder them one night. He doesn’t want to hurt people, especially kill them, but he does what he does because he has to. They say he’ll eventually be able to make his way up to heaven to see his wife. That is, until everything changes, and he gets a new partner. The man that killed him.

This book is a wild ride from start to finish. Filled with murder, blood, gore, nudity, and lots of funny jokes just tossed in there, the bright colours that the art brings really livens up the story and makes it a joy to read. I think it fits perfectly. I couldn’t ask for more. The story itself was engaging, exciting, and just something I didn’t want to put down. I couldn’t get enough, and I can’t wait for the next volume, that’s for sure. At only 111 pages, it was a breeze to read through. I definitely recommend checking it out if you like any of those things.

Review: Recon (The Fringe #1) by Tarah Benner

5/5 Stars 296 pages
Published October 9th 2014

If you know me, or just follow my blog, you should know by now. But if you don’t, I’ll let you in on a little secret. I love post apocalypse and dystopia books. I can’t get enough of them. And this book is no exception. A unique mix of a dystopia built into an apartment complex filled with everything you could ever need, this is a world where your job is assigned to you on your graduation date, and with it comes the rest of your life. But for Harper, it’s not going the way she hoped, or even expected. And it’s a book I couldn’t get enough of.

Split between two viewpoints, the first is Eli. A brutal military person, he’s been forced into the job of training new cadets, and with it comes the trauma of sending them out not only too early, but without their full year of training due to the fact that the military that protects the complex and the area around it is dwindling. Dubbed the tunnels, the complex has anything you could ever want built into it, but because of the apocalyptic world outside, they’re forced to go out and protect the area around it by whatever means necessary. And he’s just trying not to get attached.

The second viewpoint is Harper, a twenty one year old woman who’s just gotten her graduation ceremony, and with it comes a new life. Brought into the compound from the outside world as a child, it’s all she’s ever known, but it’s about to tear everything she’s grown to love to shreds. After expecting some kind of tech job, she’s auctioned off into the military tier. And that’s just the beginning of her problems. Because there’s something much darker going on than just bidding wars on people for their careers, and it’s been in control for far too long.

This was an amazing story filled with action, military training, romance, friendship, and a ton of hardships. The characters are very realistic despite their obvious differences from our own world, and they’re people that were easy to imagine because of it. Whatever they’re facing, be it their own thoughts, drug problems, crisis management, or really anything else they had to deal with in this book, they handle extremely well, the complete opposite of what I would do. It was an amazingly gripping story, and it was one that I couldn’t put down until it was done. I loved every second of it, and I’m so thankful that it’s part of a series, and I don’t have to say goodbye to the world so soon. I can’t wait to see what’s next. I think this book would be perfect for anyone looking for a good apocalyptic dystopia story, and honestly seeing as the worst thing that goes on in this are fights, swears, and kissing, I think anyone sixteen and up would enjoy it.

My Top 5 Books of March 2021

Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a great day so far. It’s the beginning of a new month, so you know what that means? I’m going to go over my favourite books of last month! I can’t wait to tell you all about them. And of course, my individual reviews and links for you to buy the books yourself if you’re interested will be added to them too. So lets get started!

First off we have Down World by Rebecca Phelps!

As the site of a former military base, there have always been rumors that East Township High School was the site of experiments with space and time. For years, students have whispered in the hallways of a doorway created within the school, one that can access multiple timelines and realities, a place known as the Down World.

As the new kid in school and still reeling from the unexplained death of her brother Robbie, Marina O’Connell is only interested in one thing: leaving the past behind. But a chance encounter with handsome Brady Picelli changes everything. He will lead Marina to a startling discovery. The Down World is real and the past, present, and future are falling out of balance.

Brady is determined to help Marina discover what really happened to her brother. However, what is taken from one world, must be repaid by another. And Marina is about to discover that even a realm of infinite possibilities has rules that must be obeyed.

Sixteen-year-old Emilee Laurence is obsessed with the Famoux—they provide a refuge from her troubled home life and the bullies at school. When she receives an unimaginable offer to become a member herself, she takes it. Leaving behind everything she’s ever known, Emilee enters a world of high glamour and even higher stakes.

Because behind their perfect image lies an ugly truth—an anonymous stalker has been dictating the Famoux’s every move, and being popular really is a matter of life or death.

Fourth is Inhuman by Denis Bajram, Valerie Mangin, & Rochebrune!

A small exploratory vessel crashes onto an unknown ocean planet after its crew is seized by a sudden madness. After escaping their sinking ship, the five survivors are helped to the surface by giant squid-like creatures who guide them to what appears to be the planet’s only island. To their surprise, they are greeted on the shore by primitive humans, who prove to be welcoming despite their cannibalistic rituals. But their fixed smiles and total docility suggest that something more sinister is going on. Are the castaways doomed to join them in submitting to the will of the mysterious Great One?

And last but not least is The Fall Volume 1 by Jared Muralt!

Readers who found themselves gripped by the apocalyptic adventure of Robert Kirkman’s THE WALKING DEAD and who were moved by the emotion in Cormac McCarthy’s THE ROAD will not want to miss Jared Muralt’s THE FALL.

After just losing his wife, one father will have to face a world in freefall; shaken to its core by an economic, social, political and health crisis without precedent. Facing seemingly unreal and very unexpected dangers, he will do whatever it takes to protect his loved ones in a country on the brink of collapse. In this internationally acclaimed series, Jared Muralt not only tells the story of one family struggling to survive, but also questions the very reasons that brought mankind to this apocalypse.

Wow! I can’t believe that three out of five books last month were comics. I mean I can believe it, I read a lot of them, but I’m surprised! And the other two were wattpad published books, which is crazy to me! Mostly because I’ve never really noticed anything from the actual wattpad publisher that has really caught my eye before, but that changed in march! I can’t wait to see what my favourites for this month are.

Have you read any of these books? Are you thinking about getting some of them? What were your favourites last month? I want to talk! Anyways, thanks for reading.

Review: The Mind-Warper Special (Strange Totems #1) by Corey Mariani

5/5 Stars 278 pages
Published March 16th 2021 by Widow White Publishing

This book is a real doozy. It’s one that I wasn’t sure I was going to be into at first glance, but I loved the cover, and I thought the description was intriguing so I thought I would give it a chance. And man, I’m glad I did. Not just a pretty cover, this book is one that the beginning and the ending are a little confusing, but the middle and the overall plot are just so interesting that I couldn’t get enough. A journey of finding yourself, and trying to integrate yourself into a secret society at the same time, while also running for your life and trying your best to stay alive, I think that this book would be perfect for anyone looking for a secret magical life hidden in plain sight.

Following a man named Charlie, his life is honestly a little below average as he struggles to keep his touring business from closing, and the bank from taking his bus. Plus, there’s this guy Kayak Brad, who’s just the worst all around. Everyone likes him though for some reason, and he keeps convincing everyone that Charlie is actually the worst, and it’s really tanking things for him. But then when things are finally starting to look up, a man holds Charlie at gunpoint and forces him to eat his biggest fear food, a cheese danish, causing him to throw it back up immediately. Then he’s drugged and kidnapped, and wakes up in a hotel room with a woman he’s never met before. The worst part? He can’t go twelve feet away from her without feeling like he’s been dipped in lava. Turns out that they’re bonded for life, and if they can’t break the bond within two days, they’re stuck like that. This begins an insane adventure, and his strange new life.

This book was one of those where you think you know where things are headed, but then it takes things for an entirely different loop, and you’re just like, what just happened? Did I read that right? Also, there are a lot of terms that are a little difficult to remember, but they get easier as time goes on and you get further into the book. Basically Charlie finds out that he and the woman, and everyone after them, are magic users, but not in the usual sense. There are many kinds of magic users, different species but they still look human. The magic they use, they have to use as a bonded pair, travelling through totem objects that hold memories and certain points in time. There’s also potions that they have made out of blood and emotions that cure certain diseases, and even huge tapeworms that feed from choices.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters, although I couldn’t tell you what they look like, were easy to imagine in my own head. The world they live in is just like our own, except for the magical aspects, but it was just as immersive as any other. And once I started it, I didn’t want to put it down. I finished it in around a day, and I didn’t regret a minute of it. I’m really interested to see what happens in the next book, seeing as this is the beginning to a series. Something interesting though is that it really gave me Refraction vibes for some reason. I can’t even begin to explain why, but I just had that book in the back of my head when I was reading this. Maybe it’s the way it was written, maybe it’s the characters, maybe it’s just the storyline. Either way, I loved that book, and I loved this one too.

Thanks for reading! Hope you’re doing well, and staying safe, and not getting kidnapped and bonded to a stranger.

Book Birthday Review: Down World by Rebecca Phelps

5/5 Stars 368 pages
Published March 30th 2021 by Wattpad Books

If I had to describe this book in just a few words, they would be an instant hit. With an amazing and super in depth storyline, it’s perfect for anyone fourteen years and up, and quickly became one of my new favourite books even at twenty four. It’s just one of those books where every time I thought the story was coming to a pause or a good place to end, it ended up just being the beginning. And I just couldn’t get enough of it.

Following a young girl named Marina from her viewpoint in first person, she’s about to start grade ten in a small town in the United States. But after losing her brother to a train accident three years ago, her and her parents lives have become very grim and depressing. Blaming her brother’s best friend, they despise him, and Marina lost her only friend because of it. And now she’s starting at a new school. Could things get any worse? She probably would say no, but this is just the beginning of a much bigger and almost unbelievable picture. That is, if she didn’t see it for herself she wouldn’t believe it.

Originally an army base, the school is a labyrinth of twists and turns, and after getting lost on her first day, she meets a senior named Brady. He’s a nice and very cute boy who genuinely just wants to help her out, and even though she doesn’t see him again for about six months after her first day, she can’t stop thinking about him. After all, everyone else that she grew up with acts like they don’t know her. But when she finally sees him again, he’s harbouring a deep secret and a mysteriously hysterical girl. And after following them to the train station where her brother lost his life, she learns that the secret really involves things that she could never imagine were real; parallel universes.

Photo by Trace Hudson on Pexels.com

Not only is the army base turned high school confusing and filled with doors that have been bricked over, but living in it’s basement is an Annihilation-like spiral staircase. And at the bottom are three doors, one each for yesterday, today, and tomorrow. But only the today one is accessible. And when Marina goes inside it, she finds her brother in the flesh, happy and thriving. That can’t be right, though, can it? He died. Little did I know, that this was just barely grazing the surface of what was really going to happen in this book.

This book is insanely in depth for how many pages it is. Jam packed with rich backstory, the characters really seem like they could be real people, despite the obvious differences between our world and theirs. Addicting and mysterious, I was pulled in from the second I started it, and I didn’t want to put it down for a second. It’s amazing without gore or romance, and I think that’s something that’s difficult to do sometimes. A perfect story in my eyes, I would be delighted to get this as a present, and it would make a really great addition to my bookshelf, with it’s breathtaking cover. I think even if you’re not super big into scifi, this is a really great story, and everyone should check it out and give it a chance to unravel itself. Even half way through the book I was thinking, this could be the end, right? But it wasn’t there was more, and more, and more. I’ll definitely be thinking about it for a long time.

Review: Vampire: The Masquerade Volume 1 by Tim Seeley, Tini Howard, Blake Howard, Adrian F. Wassel, Dev Pramanik, & Nathan C. Gooden

4/5 Stars 160 pages
Published March 16th 2021 by Vault Comics

With a beautifully dark and gothic artistic style, Vampire: The Masquerade Vol. 1 is a very interesting book about, you guessed it, vampires, and a game I’ve never played before.. These vampires, however, are a little different than the usual, being part of a secret society existing alongside our own, and anyone who dares cross them or reveal their secret is bound to be hunted down and killed in cold blood sooner or later. Perfect for the comic book readers that love a dark and grungy story full of blood and mysteries or anyone who has played the tabletop game.

Starting off right in the action, we see a vampire woman killing a human girl for finding out about her kind. Clearly, they will stop at nothing to hide their secret. Having fangs and drinking blood aren’t the only things that these vampires have though, because some can also use blood magic. But there’s an internal war going on in their society, threatening to split the city into two sections, Minneapolis, and the Minneapolis separatists. And that’s never good, especially for anyone caught in the middle. And to make things worse, there’s a group of killers mutilating and taking body parts from other vampires. And they’re unlike anything I could have imagined. I had a feeling from the beginning that this was going to be a very dark bloody book, and I was right. And I loved it.

Overall, this book was a great read and I really enjoyed getting to know more about everything going on. The characters all had real problems to deal with, other than being vampires, and I really enjoyed that, especially Cecily’s. I think she’s my favourite. I also really liked that there were character sheets to fill out in the back with tons of information for those sheets. It makes me want to try to play the game! If you like dark stories with tons of blood and mystery, and lots of points of view all weaved together, than I definitely recommend checking this out!

Good Moods, Questionable Books

Hey everyone! Hope you’re doing well today, I know I woke up in a really good mood and have already gotten a bunch of stuff done and it’s only 11am! Who am I? Anyways, I just was thinking about books, like always, and thought I would come on here and talk about my thoughts to break up the reviews a bit.

Photo by Juan Pablo Serrano Arenas on Pexels.com

You ever just in the mood to read but the book you’re reading just isn’t hitting right? Because sometimes I think, maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m just not into reading right now. But I still want to read, so I try to find something else. And that usually works for me. The problem being, that sometimes it’s a book with a review deadline, and I feel like I’m obligated to finish it before moving onto something else, even though that isn’t the case, and I do this for fun, because I don’t get paid. (Although I would love if that were the case).

Sometimes I just need to take a step back, move away from that book, and start something else. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Yes it’s hard to concentrate on multiple books at once, because sometimes I forget details, but like I’ve said in previous posts I started taking notes for them again, so that really isn’t a problem anymore. Does anyone else do this? I’d love to hear about your review process, if you even have one.

Thanks for reading! I’m so thankful for this blog. It really keeps my head level.

Review: Dryad Vol. 1 by Kurtis J. Wiebe, & Justin Osterling

Filled with beautiful art depicting beautiful people, this book starts out with a nasty diaper change in the middle of a forest. Who could have guessed? Not me, that’s for sure. After a long hard journey, Yale and Morgan find themselves and their twins in a beautiful green village. But things can’t stay peaceful forever, can they? This story is a great tale of doing what you have to do to protect the ones you love.

4/5 Stars 144 pages
Published January 19th 2021 by Oni Press

After a class trip to a local ruin outside their peaceful town, Yale and Morgan’s twins can’t get them out of their heads. They just have a feeling about them, and they’re determined to figure out what exactly that feeling is. But after making it back to there, their group is viciously attacked and kidnapped by guards from the city that their parents escaped from with only their lives and the clothes on their back. And after the guards realize that one of the teens is missing, they go on a savage hunt for them through the town. But after finding them, they realize that they don’t just want the twins, they want Yale and Morgan as well. And this leads them to a forced adventure back into the city, where they’re left fighting for their families lives against soldiers.

This story was really fun to read. The art style is almost relaxing, even though it’s depicting a lot of fighting and monsters and even switches at one point to super futuristic tech in the city. It’s books like these that are getting me more and more into the fantasy side of things, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out. I’d definitely recommend looking into it yourself, if you think it would be something you’d like. I’ll for sure keep an eye out for the second volume!

Third is Percivious Insomnia by J.J. & A.J. Cook!

An insomnia pandemic is sweeping the globe, leaving people unable to function and society on the brink of collapse…

The only problem is, it doesn’t work. With no warning. No explanation.

Unable to accept the drug’s inexplicable failure and unwilling to concede to the competition, lines are crossed, ethical boundaries are pushed to the breaking point, and disturbing realizations come to light that could completely unravel civilization as we know it… and throw into question humanity’s place in the universe.

A jetset medical thriller meets sci-fi adventure with an unforgettable cast of characters, Percivious Insomnia presents an alternate history so compelling that it could possibly be true. The first book in the Percivious Trilogy from husband-wife author duo JJ Cook & AJ Cook, MD, Percivious Insomnia sets a unique and original course for fiction of the future, and paints a timely, prescient portrait of today’s globalized society… and what may exist beyond the realm of our current understanding.

And last but not least, Someday Comes Paradise by Gary Dean Thompson!

A desolate stretch of coastline. Dune grass scattered across miles of sand. Rusty barrels exposed in the retreating tide, and a lone dune buggy streaks along this coastal road, kicking up mud and slicing through waves of mosquitoes. Up ahead, a flashing signal light swings above a lonely intersection. This is the cross-roads to the middle of nowhere.

Sam Starr is a teenager on the run with his con-woman momma, Natalie. He has maybe done bad; she has definitely done worse. They’ve arrived on a barrier island, cast away from the world where they hope to be safe. But here, crime and corruption are thicker than the Costa Rican coffee and the sand flies. A local hero, Bannion, offers his protection and a home to mother and son; yet, all is not what it seems. The vagabond fry-cook, Gash, tries to guide the boy like a prophet in the dunes. The saving grace for young Sam comes in the elegance of a Vietnamese girl, Tu Ly – in whom he glimpses tenderness and salvation. Together, they must come of age amidst the drugs and deception. They elude the Navy bombs and free dive for starfish. They cling together in despair in a hideaway as they fall in love. But most of all, they want to find a little bit of Paradise, in this world or even beyond.

A charged, Southern saga, SOMEDAY COMES PARADISE exposes a world rarely seen, where violence mixes with country music while sharks bleed on the boat docks. Danger overshadows dreams. Nothing is black and white. It’s a desperate world inhabited by compelling characters with nothing to lose.

Set on the coast in South Texas, this graphic novel reveals a journey of troubled souls, with hell-fire-and-damnation all about. Yet for Sam, Tu Ly and Natalie, the flame of hope burns hot within their darkness and stands firm against the hurricane winds.

Book Birthday Review: The Fall Volume 1 by Jared Muralt

Looking for an insane story of the apocalypse due to a virus? Do you want to see kids really have to take things into their own hands in that kind of world? If so, this might be something you want to look into the next time you’re looking for a graphic novel to read. It really shows the gritty parts of a terrifying future fantasy, and that’s just what I love about reading comics. And who knows? You might too.

5/5 Stars 152 pages
Published March 23rd 2021 by Image Comics

This book follows a family, a single dad and his two kids. After losing their mother to a virus that sweeps the world and creates a kind of chaos that destroys society as we know it, they’re forced to leave their home, sacrifice their pet, and really fend for themselves not only out in the wilderness, but in a chaotic village full of nasty people. Willing to do what they need to survive, they also end up picking up a baby along the way, and then eventually more people. It really shows the hard parts of life, like trying to live again after losing someone that means so much to you.

I loved this story from the moment I picked it up, and honestly, I knew that I would. I’m just addicted to these kinds of post apocalyptic stories, they’re so interesting and exciting to me. Yes, some parts were hard to read and hurt my heart, but I pushed through and came out clean on the other side. The art work was also a very nice addition, and really matched the story, in my opinion. I couldn’t ask for anything more from it, and I can’t wait to see what happens after this book. It really captured everything perfectly.
