EXCERPT:

“Almya. I’m not wearing—”

A throat cleared, and I didn’t even turn around. “Roan. Best friend or not, I’m going to murder you if you keep coming in here.”

“Not Roan.”

I glanced over my shoulder. Lorne.

He was leaning against the edge of the door, watching me with his aquamarine gaze that seemed to see through me. My heart picked up, and I could feel myself giving him a stupid grin, but I couldn’t stop it. “Hey.”

“Hi.” His gaze ran down my body and slowly back up, heating every inch of me. “As fashion-forward as I usually am, I think it’s probably best if you find something else for the meeting. Quickly.”

I turned back to Almya, who was still smiling—although now it looked too forced—and holding out two dresses for me to choose from.

She held one out a little farther, giving it a little shake. “This one would look lovely on you, and it’s perfect for the—”

I shook my head. “If you would just listen to me—”

“Amihanna. My love,” Lorne said softly. “I’ve been standing here for a moment, and I heard more than enough about what’s going on. The thing to remember—”

“Is that I hate dresses,” I said to Almya, hoping that she would listen. “Hate. Dresses.”

“That’s not what I was going to say.”

I turned to him, annoyed and struggling to remember that I wasn’t annoyed at him. “What?”

“The thing to remember is that you are the future queen. Not Almya.” He gave her a short, pitying glance before focusing on me again. “You decide what you do, what you say, what you wear.” He slowly walked toward me as he spoke. “So, put something on already.” He brushed a quick kiss on my lips.

Cats Playing Fetch

Does your cat play fetch? Lately Fuzz has been OBSESSED with it. He goes through these phases where he loves it and then he forgets about it for a while, but lately he just can’t stop. He has these little mouse toys that rattle, and those are just his favourite thing. He carries them around in his mouth and it’s just the cutest thing ever.

For a cat that used to live outside and probably hunt actual mice, I’m not sure how they compare, but he really likes them. Not so much once they’ve lost their rattle though. Another toy he likes is this little bouncy ball that looks like a fish, it has feather frills on it and eyes and stuff, and he could just chase it forever. The problem is that he plays with his toys so much, that they end up breaking really fast. But I can always buy more from the dollar store, where I got them in the first place.

The thing I’m wondering though, is has anyone been able to teach their cat to drop their toy in their hand like dogs sometimes do? He usually brings it back and drops it a foot or two away from me, but I just think it would be so cute for him to actually put it in my hand haha. Another thing is when I’m not feeling good he tends to bring me toys and just put them beside me and lay by me which I just think is the sweetest thing. How does he know when things aren’t great for me? I feel like I’m not good enough for him sometimes. He’s just so sweet.

Anyways, I’m obsessed with my cat, that’s for sure. I’ve added a picture of him so you all can be too. Hope you have a great day!

“I’m going to count to three,” he growls. He doesn’t have to say the rest. If I haven’t come to him by then, he’ll come to me… and I’ll regret it.

I know this game, and I know there is only one way it can end: with broken bones. If I don’t come to him, his wolf will take over and he’ll make me pay. If I obey, his wolf will still take over, and I’ll still be the one suffering the consequences.

“One,” Logan snaps.

A tear slowly rolls down my cheek and I dig my nails into my palm until they draw blood. More tears join the first and my lower lip trembles. I want Logan to see how much he’s hurting me.

“Two,” Logan counts, gesturing for me to come to him. I know that he’s filled with anticipation. He’s hoping for ‘three,’ craving it.

Review: Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 1 by Gege Akutami

4/5 Stars 192 pages
Published December 3rd 2019 by VIZ Media LLC

Not something I usually read, this book really caught my eye not only because of the cover, but because of the really impactful description. I mean, how could you say no to a book about a boy turning into a demon curse while also fighting them along the way? I had to check it out! It’s like I didn’t even have a choice. What I didn’t know however, was just how gory a black and white book could be, and really just how strange something like this could be for me to read. That being said, I really did enjoy reading it.

Following a junior high aged boy named Yuji Itadori, it closely depicts his life as he not only joins a new kind of club at his school, but also as he loses his grandfather and basically those two things turn his life upside down. After rescuing his new friends from a curse they accidentally unleashed due to their own lax nature surrounding a demonic object, he learns that the demon is basically hunting them down for said object to eat it and become stronger, so he decides to eat it himself. What he doesn’t know, is that it’s really a one in a million chance that he’ll live through it. But guess what? He does. And now he lives with a demon inside his body, that can take over when he gives it the chance and change his physical appearance and give him crazy powers.

Photo by Khoa Vu00f5 on Pexels.com

This book was really strange for me, and now even in a bad way. It had be laughing at just how absurd it was and I think that’s really funny. How often does that happen to you? It makes me want to read more books like this, because usually I’m not too keen to jump at things like this. I’m more of a superhero comic kind of girl. But I’ll definitely give more chances out when I see them. If you’re looking for something gory and kind of funny and interesting to read, I definitely recommend checking this out. The art is very simple but impactful, especially for the demonic parts, and like I said at the beginning, it’s really gory at times. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next volume.

If you’d like to grab a copy, you can here!

Thanks for reading! I love stepping outside of my comfort zone with books, do you? Hope you’re having a great day!

Mckenna’s never thought much of her nightmares, but on her seventeenth birthday, a vivid dream of burning at the stake awakens her dormant abilities, thrusting her into a world where faeries are real, spirits hold a grudge, and a High Priestess obsessed with a 16th-century prophecy is tracking her every move.

Now, her overprotective dads, Seán and Andre, are forced to tell her the truth—they know who her birth mother is, and her life is not the surrogate story she’s always been told. Abigail, Mckenna’s mom, is some sort of mystic, and Mckenna a Wise One.

Along the way, she learns to harness her innate magic and trust her intuition, as best she can anyway—Cillian, a kind and passionate delegate who crosses her path, is proving much harder to read.

EXCERPT:

Bruised and battered, the young woman was dragged through the screaming, unruly mob. Her wrists were bound behind her by a rope as thick as the noose she now faced.

“Buidseach! Buidseach!” Witch. Witch.

“Bàsachadh!”

Die.

She halted in front of the noose, unperturbed, for she knew her death would end swiftly. The man who held the end of her rope looked from her calm expression to the noose, and let out a shrill laugh.

“A quick snap of the neck, aye, Bessie girl? You don’t think you’re getting off that easy, do you? Nah, that there isn’t for your kind.”

The ugly man, towering and troll-like, hauled her further on like a rag doll, finally leading her to a pit loaded with broken wood fragments, branches, and logs.

She was going to be burned alive.

In that instant, her body trembled with the fear she had been trying so desperately to conceal. Of dying, no—she knew this life would not be her last, and she was ready to part ways with this physical body. But she would be lying to herself if she said she hadn’t been hoping for a less painful demise.

He tightened the rope from her wrists around the wood banister that stood erect in the centre of the pit, then secured more rope round her ankles. “Spill your guts, now or never, buidseach,” he spat.

The woman scanned the crowd. Foolish, blind, she thought. They had no idea what would become of their Earth. No, she did not regret her actions. And if she had to burn for them, then so be it.

She held her chin up and addressed the spectators. Her voice was steady, knowing. “There will come a day when your fate shall depend upon a witch such as me—and you will beg for mercy.” The crowd cackled and spat back, simultaneously enraged and amused. But no one laughed louder than the troll-man. “Devil-worshipping hag.”

He lowered his torch to the base of the pit, and the flames caught quickly. She watched them crawl towards her boots, but her eyes were forced shut by the rising smoke. In an instant, beads of sweat leaked like rain on her forehead, and her lungs swelled to twice their size.

Just when she hoped she might pass out from the heat, the flames grew larger, now licking the base of her legs. What followed was an acute, unfathomable pain. The flames travelled higher, higher, until they enveloped the lower half of her body—and she could no longer bear the sheer agony of her skin melting away.

Will it End?

Mentally, I haven’t been doing great. My review stockpile is dwindling. Not because I haven’t been reading, but because I’ve been reading books that don’t come out on my regular schedule. I feel like I’m constantly falling behind. On life, on books, on everything. And I don’t think it should be like that.

Photo by Lucie Liz on Pexels.com

I have really bad anxiety. Like, all the time. Like I can’t even think about having any kind of life while I’m like this. And it’s been happening about five or six days a week. That’s five or six days a week that I’m laid up in bed or on the couch, unable to do basic things because I’m having horrible panic attacks. It’s draining, honestly.

Maybe two days a week I’m feeling good enough to do things and not cry about them. I know a lot of people are feeling like this in the last year, but for me, it’s been like this for years. And I’m over it, honestly. I’m not sure what to do anymore.

I know this isn’t a book post for my book blog, but I do get really good reception when I post things like this here, because I think that they’re personal and things that everyone can relate to. So here I am, talking about it again. All of my followers getting to know me like this. I’m not sure how I feel about it to be honest, but if it helps someone feel like they’re not alone, than I think that’s a good thing.

Anyways, what I’m saying is that you have to keep trying. To me, to you, to anyone who needs it. Keep trying. And maybe one day it won’t be like this.

She thought she accidentally slept with her boss…
Then she met his twin brother.

Real talk: I slept with my boss. Back before he even was my boss. Back when I had no clue who he was.

Real talk: My boss is an arrogant jerk. I hate him. If we didn’t work so well together, I would have told him exactly where he could shove his pompous attitude a long time ago.

Turns out…my boss has a twin. Identical twin.

Now I know why he’s always acted like our one night together never happened. Why he acted like he’d never met me before when I started working for him.

It wasn’t him that night. It was his brother.

A brother who’s just as gorgeous as my boss and a hell of a lot nicer.

Real talk: I’m kind of…bothered that it wasn’t my boss that night.

But that’s before certain revelations about that night come to light.

EXCERPT:

A thin manila file is dropped on top of my French fade manicure, halting my progress in the email I’m furiously typing. My fingers pause as I suck in a much-needed breath. Because only one person in this entire office would have the balls to do such a thing. And unfortunately, he signs my frigging paycheck.

I hear a muffled male voice and know he’s probably telling me to “turn off the squabbling, men-bashing drivel” and pay attention. That’s exactly what he called Kennedy’s podcast one day when he’d been curious to know what I was always listening to and had swiped up one of my earbuds before I could stop him.

I tap my Bluetooth earpiece, turning it off. But I don’t look at him. Why? People not making eye contact when they speak to him is one of his biggest pet peeves.

Heh. Take that, prick.

“Gee, sorry, boss man. Didn’t quite catch that.”

He pauses for a moment, probably to grind his teeth together hard enough to give himself a migraine. “Spec sheet for prospective client,” he grates in a low voice, referring to the file still balanced on my hands as I resume typing. “Look over their queries and come up with an approximate quote, as well as a realistic timeline for each individual project.”

My eyebrow notches up, though I keep my focus trained ahead. “I guess saying ‘please’ is too much of a time waster?”

“Yes. Since I know you’re going to do it regardless, that one syllable would have been a waste of my time and breath.”

I slowly nod at my computer screen. “Yep. Better save all that hot air for the next ass you have to blow smoke up.”

“Better than kissing those asses.”

I click my tongue against my teeth. “If I were you, I’d start puckering up because your personality is severely lacking in both charm and tact.”

“From the horse’s mouth, huh, duchess?”

Now, now, I look up at him.

Did I mention that Ryder Colson is a brutally beautiful man?

Because of course he would be.

His hair color is somewhere between dark blond and light brown, complementing his golden skin tone. It’s slightly longer on top and cut shorter at the sides. He always somehow manages to get that floppy part to sweep across his forehead at just the right angle to look suave. A small strand perpetually hangs over his left eyebrow, no matter how many times he shoves it back. His eyes are a soulful blue, his nose is long and straight, and day-old stubble claims permanent residency on his square jawline.

Worst of all, his bottom lip has this full, rounder thing going on that pisses off my neglected libido to the point that I want to dig my teeth into that flesh until I draw blood.

Easy, girl. Your momma didn’t raise no psycho.

Despite the casual leniencies that he affords his employees, Ryder never dons anything other than crisp, immaculately tailored suits. Hellaciously expensive ones that I’m pretty sure he has shipped in from London. As the owner and CEO, he frequently meets with clients, in and out of the office, so he always has to look professional. And flaming hot.

Damn him.

Hey, I’m human. He’s sex on two legs. There’s nothing criminal about noticing it.

I dagger him with a look that would eviscerate a lesser man. And as much as it galls me to admit, Ryder here could never be categorized as lesser in any aspect of his life. “You could have just emailed this to me, you know. No need for these precious heart-to-hearts of ours.”

His navy eyes dance with something resembling amusement. “Now, what kind of person would that make me when I can clearly see how cutting me down at every opportunity brings you such joy?”

I narrow my eyes. “A prospect you’re more than familiar with.”

He smirks. “I don’t cut you down, duchess. I vex you. There’s a big difference.”

“The end result is the same no matter what verb you use,” I say through clenched teeth. “I can only assume your overall goal is to piss me off.”

He shrugs, like the apathetic jerkoff he is. “You do your best work when you’re exasperated. Part of my job as boss is to keep my employees motivated.”

“You’re confusing infuriation with motivation.”

He slides his hands in his pockets, far too casually. “And yet I know you’ll have that to me by the end of the day. Seems my methods are effective. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?”

My teeth clamp down on my tongue to silence the instinctual vitriol.

I’ll do a swan dive into a river of boiling lava before I ever admit that he’s right.

I can’t resist a challenge. He knows I’m going to bust my ass every day at work, no matter how acerbic our conversations get. Something about Ryder’s demeanor toward me, his work ethic, and his general expectations of his employees have always lit a fire inside me, making me want to rise to the occasion. It’s irrational—and just plain idiotic—how much I’ve wanted to impress him from day one. Ever since I found out that my boss has absolutely no memory of sleeping with me, I’ve been determined to prove myself.

So help me Mary Magdalene, I will make him remember me.

Review: Complex (Silent Beautiful Universe #1) by A.D. Enderly

4/5 Stars 700 pages
Published November 17th 2020 by Luminary Media

Not usually into books of this length, Complex really blew me away because it was able to completely hold my attention for it’s entirety of 700 pages. Five separate books in one, though not described as that, this was a rollercoaster from start to finish of an epic tale in which a dystopia was ruled by businesses. Which, if you ask me, is actually a very real option for the future, especially in places where they have more power than they should. I don’t know why this hasn’t been written about more often, because I really just find it fascinating, and I can’t get enough. But you know me, I’m obsessed with all things tech, scifi, and dystopia. What more could I ask for? This book is perfect for me.

Described as a story of two sisters Val and Kat, who are left alone after the death of their father in their dystopian world of Legacy, the area just outside of the Arc, a dystopia run by businesses. Though it seems like everything is better and safer, there are just different kinds of threats hiding behind the green grass and order. But this story is so much more than just that. The characters range from very poor, to very wealthy, all having completely different personalities and lives. And each person has their own piece to bring to the perfectly put together puzzle. After Kat is kidnapped in the middle of the night, Val blames herself for not being able to fight off the offenders, but can’t sit around feeling sorry for herself forever. She does what she has to do to get information about her missing sister, including selling her body online for a scummy man who claims he has what she needs. But what she digs herself into is far beyond anyone could have ever guessed would happen.

Photo by Kozymeii Kong on Pexels.com

There’s Trevor, a romantic interest for Val and a very helpful character in the story with his hacking skills and clever way of thinking, Riku, a high up man in the military who just wants to right the wrongs in the world, and hopefully save his friend and her child. There’s Ian, an insanely smart hacker who we don’t get to know very thoroughly but he really ends up helping out in the end, Ray, an assassin with a drug addiction who doesn’t really care about anyone other than the people he’s working for, and Manalo, a sweet old grandfather who just wants to have a purpose for his life again, after the loss of his wife. And there’s a few other characters we get to see the world through, but really all of these characters breath life into this epic and long winded novel. Without their lifelike personalities, I would have lost interest a long time ago, because even though I’m extremely interested in the world that they live in, you need good characters to keep everything moving along at a steady pace. And boy, did it.

I think this book is an amazing mix of dystopian scifi, futuristic tech with the computers inside every single person, and a very intriguing story of what could go wrong when businesses end up taking over for the government. When emergencies happen, like a virus that spreads too quickly and mutates too fast to keep up with, and especially when the computers get too strong for us to handle. When they realize that they want more than just to help, that they want to do. And I loved every moment of it. The end of the book also hints to a series, which I’m very excited to deep dive into once it’s released. With that ending, who wouldn’t be? I’m very glad I got a chance to check it out, and I think that the beautiful cover it has would be welcomed into anyone’s intensive book collection. Honestly, I’d even like a poster of it if that was a thing. It’s just so aesthetically pleasing, and says so much about the book without having to actually say anything. Overall, if you’re a fan of tech, scifi, dystopia’s, and stories of survival no matter what, than I definitely recommend checking this book out.

EXCERPT:

“Earth to Jameson!” Michael yelled at the top of his lungs. It caused Aaron and Jenna to look over to where we were standing. Something inside of me clicked and I took off like a shot, racing towards them. My anger continued to build as my mind raced.

Witches. On the human side of town. Witches. Here. Right here. How dare they? How dare they!

As I reached Aaron and Jenna, they were scrambling to grab their backpacks and run. I grabbed Jenna’s backpack strap and pulled, causing her to let out a yelp. As she was jerked back towards me, I reached out and grabbed her. My hand wrapped around her neck.

She gasped and dropped the backpack. The weight surprised me and I looked down at it, swinging in my hand. I looked back up at her. She was clawing at my hand, her face full of panic. Her eyes were wide and staring at me. I stared back. My fingers clawed into her neck.

I’m doing it! I’m going to kill a witch!

“You’re killing her! Let go!” Aaron yelled at me. He ran up to me, yanking on the arm holding the backpack. I glanced at him, my focus still on Jenna.

“Jameson! Let go of her!” Michael yelled. He sprinted up beside me, panting heavily.

“Why?” I asked, turning to look at Michael.

“What do you mean why? You’re going to kill her!” Michael stared at me in disbelief.

“So?” I replied. I couldn’t get myself to care about the consequences that would fall on me. All I cared about was revenge.

“Jameson, look, man. I know you. You don’t want this. Your mom wouldn’t want this,” Michael said, trying to reason with me. I looked at him, tears in my eyes.

Book Birthday Review: Fire and Cinder (Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #6) by Christina Bauer

Who could have guessed another Fairy Tales of the Magicorum book would be out so soon after the last? Not me! But I’m excited for it nonetheless. I couldn’t wait to see what our heroes would get up to this time, and wasted no time starting it, especially after the events of the last book. If you know me, you know I fully enjoy this series. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a quick read to break up the other books on your schedule, and doesn’t usually disappoint.

4/5 Stars 265 pages Published February 23rd 2021 by Monster House Books

Following Elle, Agatha, Alec and Jacoby in this book, we find Elle in her house eating pizza to cope with the loss of her boyfriend, Alec, who’s been transported into a magical gemstone prison by an evil fae. She feels like she can’t control her magic enough to go and save him, but knows she needs to do something, and in the meantime, she needs to take care of herself too. But after that, she accidentally sends herself back in time to see her mom and her in her childhood home. This sets off a chain of events that also sets the pace for the rest of the book.

Agatha, on the other hand, just wants to go back to her normal life but without her mother and sister, before she found out all the things she didn’t know about herself and her ties to the fae world, like the fact that she’s the last of a missing species and the only one who can save their world. She doesn’t mind the new obsession that Jacoby has developed with her, though, she even has started to like having him around. But she would never tell him that, of course.

The boys however are kind of backup characters for this book. I feel like the spotlight is mostly on the girls, occasionally showing what the boys are thinking to help the story move along. I really enjoyed reading this, and the ending! Wow. That’s all I have to say about that, this is a no spoiler review blog after all. But let me tell you, when the action starts, it really all goes down at once. Will he girls be able to save the fae world and the people that they care about? You’ll have to read to find out!

This was a very easy and relaxing read for me, and I really enjoy getting thrown back into this series whenever there’s a new book out. The writing is funny and quirky, lots of silly little jokes tossed in there to liven it up, but when it comes down to it, there really are some important and serious things that happen in this book and those don’t take away from that. I think this was a very nice addition to the series, an I’m hoping for more Bryar Rose appearances in the future, maybe even another book from her point of view. And did I even say anything about how beautiful this cover is? Because I think it’s my favourite for the series so far! Like always I love the characters because of how silly and realistic they are despite their magic abilities and the obvious differences between our worlds, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
