Genres: Erotica, Romance

Tucked away in an Alpine village surrounded by a forbidden forest, mute pastry chef Elise lives a lonely life. She spends her days at her father’s patisserie fending off advances from a lecherous boulanger (bread baker) and baking her heart out.

Good things come to those who bake.

When her father suddenly dies, Elise is thrown out of the only home she’s ever known and pawned off to the baker who wants her to do more than stuff his cannolis. Out of options, she decides to make a run for it during a snowstorm with her only earthly possession: her dog, Monsieur Croque.

They’ve waited their entire lives for her.

Living in seclusion due to a pact, wolf shifters Sacha and Lucian lead quiet lives in the forest; living off the land, hunting, and dreaming of one day claiming the pastry chef they’ve been admiring from afar. On a night like any other, they hear her cries and come to her rescue. Finally in their possession, the smitten brothers lay claim to the baking beauty, and Elise is about to discover that sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too.

Heartless
Sybil Bartel
(Alpha Bodyguard #9)
Publication date: November 23rd 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Bodyguard.

Sentry.

Explosives expert.

There was a reason I was the only Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician in the Marines who’d never sustained any injuries. I didn’t take risks. Ever. My actions were precise. My thoughts were controlled, and I lived by one creed—no second chances.

Except serving my country as an EOD in the Marines had a shelf life. Promoted off the front lines, I didn’t want to ride out my career behind a desk. A civilian job with the best security firm in the business seemed like a better solution… until a frightened client with haunted eyes lied to me about everything.

Now she was going to find out how heartless a bodyguard could be.

Author Bio:

Sybil Bartel grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew her into the world of storytelling. She loves the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes her swoon.

Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she isn’t writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…

But Seriously?

Here are ten things you probably really want to know about Sybil.

She grew up a faculty brat. She can swear like a sailor. She loves men in uniform. She hates being told what to do. She can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks her out. Her favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—she can’t decide. She has a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on her for driving directions, ever. And she has a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell her husband.

The ‘Naturals Season One: Awakening Episodes 1-4 by Robin Parrish, Melody Carlson, Aaron M. Patterson, and K.C. Neal Review

4/5 Stars 49 pages
Published October 14th 2012 by StoneHouse Ink

I’m not very familiar with stories like these, ones that come out four chapters at a time every three weeks and categorize themselves as episodes and seasons like a tv show, but now that I know about it, I’m honestly kind of into it. Something strange is going on in Silverwood.

Not a lot happens in this book, which is why normally I wouldn’t enjoy it. We’re introduced to each of the four main characters, in the third person viewpoint, a chapter at a time. If we’re classifying it as a novella, I would say I didn’t like it. But because it’s episodes, I think we got to know a lot for a first to fourth episode. And I’m intrigued, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next set.

Four different authors crafted this, but you can’t really tell between their writing styles. It all fits together really well. Someone new is moving into the mansions in her town, and Avery isn’t happy about it. That being said, she doesn’t really want to like her new neighbour, but is very interested in him. Marshall sometimes feels like there’s someone else in his dreams with him. He feels lack luster in his life beside his interesting friends. Hailey is an intimidating soccer player with a drunk mom. And finally, Israel, an abused boy with extra thick blood who moves around a lot.

This book was over long before I wanted it to be, and I devoured it in about half an hour. I can’t wait to check out more, and I think that people who like books about teens with strange powers would really enjoy reading this book too.

Things I Wish Goodreads Was

I’ve been on Goodreads for almost ten years now, which is crazy considering I’m 23 right now, and what I’ve always wanted is a social media site based around books. Goodreads is almost that.

What I wish it was more of, is people bonding and chatting over books. Everything, to me, seems kind of disorganized and hard to navigate, especially in talking topics in groups. Does anyone else feel like that?

Photo by Janko Ferlic on Pexels.com

I love being able to see what everyone’s reading and their thoughts, but I wish it was more status updates, people chatting on posts, and really just bonding in general.

I’ve never really made any friends from there, hardly every talk to people except authors interested in my blog, and I would honestly love to.

Anyways, that’s really all I can think of on the topic, is that it hasn’t changed much in the last ten years and I wish people wanted to talk more, and things were more organized. Do you have anything else you think goodreads should change? Lets chat about it!

Thanks for reading. Hope you’re having a great day.

Smoke (Burned #2) by Ellen Hopkins Review

Wow! I can’t believe I read the first book on this duo, Burned, over three years ago. I can remember it like it was yesterday. Whether that’s because of the content, the abuse, the love, or just the storytelling in general, I’m not sure. But I’m glad I got around to finally wrapping everything up. Like always, I love Ellen Hopkins’ writing, not just the style of it but the way she weaves her stories together. They’re heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time. I can’t get enough, even though they’re hard to read sometimes.

After we finished the last book, we were left at more than one death, and a lot of horrific confusion. Pattyn had just lost the person she loves most in her life, her boyfriend Ethan, and not only him, but their unborn baby as well. That and her abusive father. He died by a gunshot in the shed in front of her and her traumatized and abused sister, Jackie.

So when we start this book, Pattyn is on the run from the police, taking a bus as far as she can go, to see the ocean before she’s certain she too will die. She finds herself after quite some time working as a maid and nanny on a farm far from anywhere she’s ever known, and quite content hiding away and trying to forget about what she’s been through. Jackie, however, is at home recovering from a very violent night of not only physical abuse, but sexual abuse as well. She faces a very different life than Pattyn, one filled with secrets and harsh words, forced to stay silent about what’s happened to her, while her mother tries to just forget anything ever happened, even inviting the boy that’s done that to her to come to a holiday dinner. Luckily, she makes friends with a boy at school, Gavin, who really changes her life, and her outlook on life.

This book, like all of Ellen Hopkins books, are a little hard to read because of the subject matter, but if you can bear to read the horrific things happening to the characters, you really get to see them overcome their demons and blossom into the people that they should be. That they know that they can be, and you know that they can be. Though it can be triggering, I can’t even begin to explain how nice it is to see that they can get through the bad things that happen to them, and that’s why I can’t stop reading the books that she puts out.

I’m so glad that I got to see this storyline all wrapped up, and that not all the bad things that happen stick around forever. Not only can these characters grow from their trauma, but you can too, and the author has added a blurb like she always does, at the end of the book about where to get help, and the statistics of people who are in situations just like the ones in the books. I highly recommend checking them out, and even if you find the subject matter hard to get through, really trying hard to see it through to the end because it is worth it.

Resist (Breathe #2) by Sarah Crossan Review

4/5 Stars 368 pages
Published October 8th 2013 by Greenwillow Books

Can you believe that I read the first book to this duo over five years ago? Because I can’t. That being said, I did kind of forget what the whole thing was about, but that didn’t stop me from deep diving into this one. By the end of the book, I was all caught up, and remembered probably half of the other one. That’s not important, though. I really need to keep up with my books and remember to finish things like these before it gets to be too long. That being said, I really enjoyed reading this sequel to Breathe.

Following the same characters from the first book, we see Alina, Bea, Quinn and Ronan’s lives as they try to keep on living after The Grove has been nuked, and most of the characters have been pushed out of the life saving pod, one of the only places with air in their known world. But it’s still run by a corrupt minister and his men, who segregate the rich from the poor, and divide the available air accordingly.

Photo by Helena Lopes on Pexels.com

When the book begins, Alina and her friends are on a boat with some drifters that she’s met in the last story, and made a team with. They’re determined to get to Sequoia before their air tanks run out, though some of them are very sceptical, and one in particular ends her life because she feels so hopeless about the subject. They think that they’re the only ones left of their group. Bea, Quinn and Jazz are doing the same, but injured and hiding in the ruins. Ronan is back in the pod after the rebellion, his mind made up completely differently than his sisters, and that causes a lot of friction. Either way, all the characters are in very different situations, each thinking that they’re the only ones left.

Photo by Stefan Stefancik on Pexels.com

Action packed, rebellious and a struggle to survive, the characters go through horrifying things from forced pairings to war, and even torture. Some of the things I couldn’t believe were happening, that characters could be so evil, but it was so nice to finally reach the end of the book and see what happened in the end. Though this book took a day longer than it usually would take me to read a book of this size, that wasn’t because of the story. Once I was in, I was in, and I didn’t want to put it down.

If you’re looking for a book about strong teenagers just trying to save the world no matter what their individual beliefs are, then this is the book for you. I love the post apocalyptic world with no air that they live in, because it’s a lot more unique than other post apocalyptic books I’ve read. I never had thought about the possibility of a world without plants or air, but now I have a clear picture in my mind. If you haven’t checked out the first book, I recommend that as well before this one.

Snow Time

Hey everyone! Sorry I’m so late on my thursday post. Seasonal depression hit me like a brick, and I feel like I barely have the motivation to even get out of bed in the morning, you know? But here I am, posting two days late. Hope that’s okay.

Once the snow hits, I just feel like all my energy is zapped away. Where does it go? I can’t even pick up a book, much less even think about looking at my unread pile, or the pub dates coming up for books I need to review. Does anyone else feel like that?

Even though I have no energy, I still have to take care of my cat, shovel, shower, and most importantly, eat. I think that’s the hardest one of all. Just eating feels like a struggle. I can do the other things because they’re more important, but eating feels like the biggest mountain in the world for some reason.

Photo by Ivan Bertolazzi on Pexels.com

Anyways, here I am, pushing along, and catching up on my posts on a saturday because I’ve already had two naps today after shoveling snow and ordering groceries for my great grandparents. Lucky for me, I have a massive stockpile of pre-written reviews to post, so if I can keep up my motivation to pull out my laptop, at least that means I’ll have things to post.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re doing well, despite the weather, or the seasons changing, or whatever. I really appreciate you.

Lost Solace (Lost Solace #1) by Karl Drinkwater Review

4/5 Stars 273 pages
Published October 15th 2017 by Organic Apocalypse

Though I haven’t read anything from author Karl Drinkwater before, I’m intrigued by their other works after this book. I was a little confused at first, but once I was into the book, I really was into it. You know I love a good sci-fi space adventure, and this just adds another story to my list of ones I really enjoyed. A really nice cover, a very unique story, unlike anything I’ve read before, and an action packed plot, I couldn’t put it down.

Following a girl named Opal, it shows her life as she flies through space in a stolen military ship with an insanely upgraded artificial intelligence, who she’s named Clarissa. It begins with her in chryo, and Clarissa waking her up and making her food. Though they haven’t known each other for very long, they’re very familiar, and are headed to a lost ship, something they’re not even sure is anything more than a myth. Opal is hoping to not only get rich off of what she finds on it, but to find information to her past on it also. All that, without being caught by the military. What a dream that was.

Photo by Rakicevic Nenad on Pexels.com

What she finds on the ship, however, is beyond anything she could have imagined. A kind of alien species, or something like that, that has bonded into a ship, and created something grotesque and horrifying and really interesting and insane all in one go. Flesh cakes the interior, creating turrets that seem to grow out of the wall at key points for attacks, and horrifying monsters spawn again out of the wall to track not only Opal, but the military that tracks her down to kill her.

This book was very interesting and unique, and even though it’s not my new favourite, I’m glad I got the chance to check it out. If you’re looking for a very different and action packed sci-fi adventure, this is the book for you.
