Review: Villainous by Stonie Williams, Jef Sadzinski, Giovanna T Orozco, & Chris Fernandez

A unique take on a superhero comic book, Villainous is an exciting and very interesting story to read. Following a girl who looks like a reptile, tail, scales, claws and all, she finds her way through the world as she works toward her goal, being a superhero. But she really doesn’t know what she’s in for, and honestly neither did I. A beautifully done book, I really enjoyed reading it from start to finish.

Matilda is a girl who’s excited to start her apprenticeship with the local superhero troop, The Coalition. But it’s not exactly what she expected. Mostly doing gopher errands, she feels like her new identity as Rep-Tilly is hidden in the shadows. But things turn around quickly for her when she finds out that they don’t just save people, they also kill the people that they deem bad enough to kill. And she’s not sure how she feels about that. She just wants to be a hero, and heroes don’t kill people, right? That’s until they set her up as a terrorist to the world for finding out their big secret.

This book was an exciting story of how things can go wrong at the worst time, and people aren’t always who you think they are. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and I feel like things wrapped up pretty well at the end of the book. I’d love to know more about them and their world, but you know, it’s just one graphic novel, and there’s only so much story that you can pack into it. I feel like the art really fit the storytelling as well. Definitely check it out if you get the chance, and if you like superheroes.

Review: Mara’s Awakening (The Mara Files #1) by Leo Flynn

A very short novella, the first book in The Mara Files is set in a prison filled with a mismatched crowd of people and humanoids. Told in the third person viewpoint, we meet a very interesting woman with a robotic arm named Mara, who’s in her forties, and has been wrongly imprisoned for six years. And today’s the day that she gets out of solitary confinement. Who would have guessed that was the wrong move.

A warrior and a war hero, Mara is someone that everyone knows about, at least in the prison. But soon after being put into a group cell, she makes friends with her roommates, and learns that they have an escape plan. All too quickly the plan is put into action, and they’re on their way. With a beautiful cover and a very intriguing synopsis, this book is a whirlwind of action, and I enjoyed reading it. I’m interested in seeing what happens in the next installment, because it was very clear to me that this was just the beginning. I think this book would be perfect for someone looking for a short escape, but with a very interesting story. The only problem I had with it was that I had the feeling like I was missing something, but that wasn’t a big deal, and it was so short that it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Check it out if you get the chance!

Cool Sex: An Essential Young Adult Guide to Loving, Mindful Sex by Diana Richardson & Wendy Doeleman Review

A very informative book, Cool Sex brings a new kind of intimacy to your relationship, full of spirituality and emotions and most importantly relaxation. Whether you’re addicted to sex or sometimes it turns painful, or even just looking for new things to experiment with, this book is full of ideas to not only get yourself to relax, but also your partner to relax, whoever they might be, without actually getting down to it.

Not a book I would usually read, I picked this up next because it was sent to me, and I thought, why not? Might be interesting. And it was interesting. Though I don’t think I would personally be interested in some of the things talked about in this book, I think the main point of it was to relax, whether it be in your daily life, or when you’re getting intimate with yourself or your partner. It offers many different relaxation techniques from breathing exercises, to just relaxing in bed with your partner. And that was unexpected for me, coming from a book with a title like this one.

Not only did it talk about relaxation tips, but it taught you everything you need to know about your and your partner’s bodies, from intimate areas to just regular parts of your body. Consider this a spiritual sex ed class that your school never really taught you about. A very interesting read. If you’re looking for something a little out of your normal reading boundaries to read and have an interest in non-fiction and how to better your life, I think maybe you’d enjoy reading this.

If you’d like to grab a copy, you can do so here.

Thanks for reading! Hope you’re having a great day.

And here’s an excerpt from the book!

PROLOGUE: Anonymous

I can’t be late.

If I’m late, they won’t let me in. I’ll be disqualified. This is the year  I win. I can’t be disqualified.

I glance in the mirror and adjust my heather gray hood, slide on my  black sunglasses, tug on my gloves, and step out of the car. According to  my navigation system, this vacant house is my destination, and I have  arrived. Eight cars are already here.

The white FOR SALE sign in the lawn gives me some comfort that  we may be safe here, but this annual meeting is risky. Having all of us  in one place tonight could mean revealing our identities to outsiders.  Anonymity is our strongest weapon. We can never lose it.

I glance at the cars, trying to match them to possible members in  my mind. One license plate reads QT PIE. How can we be a secret  organization with our cars on display like this? How can we remain secret  if members refuse to be discreet?

My phone says 9:59 p.m. I throw it in the back seat where it slides  under my AP Physics book. I have to be inside this house by 10:01 p.m.  Forget force, mass, or acceleration. I need to run.

Ten steps. I climb ten more giant steps, sliding into the room as the  clock hand clicks into place.

10:01.

A girl locks the door behind me.

An envelope with my pseudonym written on it is on my chair. I am  the ninth girl to sit down. I resist the urge to sit at the head of the table,  but inside I know this is where I deserve to sit.

One year of effort comes down to this moment. I did my best. Ten  people dropped out of school because of me. No one at this table should  be able to beat that stat.

Last year, tears fell because of me! Terror reigned because of me! Break  ups, friendships lost, hearts broken….all due to me! But will it be enough  to be Number One?

We open our envelopes simultaneously. Three years, I have ranked in  the top five. This is my senior year. There’s no more time to compete. I  want to win. I deserve this victory.

I slide the paper out, trying to avoid eye contact with the other  members in the room knowing they will attack if they sense fear. Sadly,  this envelope contains what I feared:

A Picture.

An envelope with a Picture that does not contain a dime means I  have a new target for the school year. It also means someone in this room  outranks me. It means I am not Number One. Last year’s Number One  did not choose me. She had the final say. I should have had enough votes  to win if everyone voted based on the evidence.

One at a time, we slide our Pictures toward the center of the table.  Strangely, the eighth picture I see looks just like the picture from my envelope. Do we have twins in this year’s mix?

I look in my envelope once more thinking I might have overlooked  my dime. Could Number One have made a mistake and forgotten to put  the coin in my envelope?

I hear the sound of a dime hitting the glass table. The dime is reserved  for Number One.

Number One rises from her seat and walks toward the head of the  table. There are nine heather gray hoods around the table, but only she  wears the bedazzled crown.

I watch her toss the dime on the table. When it lands flat on its side  we are allowed to speak.

Silence is replaced with the sound of nervous chatter. I watch and  listen trying to memorize each voice, height, weight, or any distinguishing  feature like a tattoo or a signature scent. Nine heather gray jogging suits.  No jewelry. No nail polish. Gray gym shoes. Gray socks.

I believe I may know the identity of everyone in this room, but I’d  love to be one hundred percent certain. I have only worked directly with  seven of them. Four years of battling with and against them, but I still  don’t know every member.

“Enough of the whining!” Number One exclaims. “The results are  final. This is a new year. This is a new battle. We don’t have time to fight  one another.”

Chastened, the room quiets instantly. Hesitantly, another member  points to the two pictures that seem to show the same caramel colored  girl with almond eyes and asks, “Are we…changing the rules? I mean,  are we putting two girls on the same target? Or are they identical twins?”

Number One adjusts her black sunglasses.

“No,” she replies with a fake British accent. “Actually, they are triplets.”  She pulls out the Picture from her own envelope, showing the group a  face with an X drawn across it. It’s the same face as the one in my picture,  but the triplet in the picture has dimples.

Number One explains that the person who gets both their target and  this triplet with the deep dimples to drop out of school will wear the  crown. I know that person will be me. I don’t care which member will  rank last, but I will rank first this year even if it is only for a semester.

And when Viola finds out her dad recruited Dare, his number one player, to be her friend?

Her inner Slytherin demands revenge.

The solution: Get Dare to be her fake boyfriend.

Convincing the star athlete to pretend is easier than she’d thought it would be. The hard part is protecting her heart. With every word, touch, and kiss, Viola’s feelings become more real.

Planet Paradise by Jesse Lonergan Review

Not really sure what I was getting myself into, Planet Paradise is a really cute graphic novel, for what the story really is. I loved the art, and really disliked everyone but the main character, but I think that’s the point. Short and sweet, I really enjoyed this book.

Following a person on their way to Planet Paradise with a whole slew of tourists who have also been put to sleep in chambers on a rocket, something goes wrong and it crashes down to a planet inhabited by vicious dinosaurs. They’re forced to fend for themselves and not only save their own life, but also those left alive, including a very unfriendly ship captain. But things aren’t what they seem once everything seems back on it’s way up for our hero.

There isn’t really much to say about this book, it was a nice and chill read despite the story content. I really feel for the main character, and I hope that their vacation goes better for them, as well as the rest of their life. If you’d like something short and unique to fill the gap in your reading list, than you should definitely think about checking this book out.

The Cup and The Prince (Kingdom of Curses and Shadows #1) by Day Leitao Review

If you know me, you know that I never used to be into books about magic, or sword fighting, or potions or things like that. But it’s books like these that have been changing my mind. A solid read, this story is full of mystery, questioning, a brave character that just keeps proving her own doubts wrong, and of course a lot of confusion. But all of that confusion doesn’t make for a bad story, in fact it made for an amazing story. And of course, I can’t wait for the next book after that insane cliff hanger of an ending. I really loved this book.

Following a seventeen year old girl named Zora, she hasn’t really found her footing yet in life. Teaching children to sword fight for as long as she can remember has made her a very good fighter in The Dark Valley, the only place in their world where shadow monsters spawn from darkness. So, they don’t let there be shadows anywhere. Always wearing tight fitting clothes, never using blankets or wearing skirts, and keeping furniture close to the ground as well as lights on at all times. Her life is about to change though, when her boyfriend starts pressuring her for something she’s not ready for, and she realizes that he’s been cheating on her. He doesn’t love her, and she’s humiliated, and sometimes when that happens, you need to take revenge swiftly, because if you think about it for too long, than your chance will be gone. And that’s exactly what she does.

Photo by Jou00e3o Gustavo Rezende on Pexels.com

She steals his letter out of his bag that he foolishly has been too confident to sign his name on, proving that he’s the champion of The Dark Valley, and giving him acceptance into The Royal Games, and this year, competing for The Blood Cup against the other strong champions. But what she doesn’t realize until she gets there, is that there’s something bigger at play, and someone’s out to get her. Not only because she’s the smallest, and not because she’s the only girl, but because she’s getting in the way of their plan. And that’s not good for anyone.

Photo by Maria Pop on Pexels.com

Like I said earlier, I haven’t always been into full fantasy stories like these with potions and sword fighting and enchantments, but books as great as these are making me really enjoy them. Once I started this book, I couldn’t get enough, and because it’s not as long as other books I’ve been reading lately, I really tore through it, and enjoyed the entire ride. Especially the ending, because I really didn’t have a clue that any of that stuff was coming. I think my favourite character is Zora, because she’s just so tough, an even when she’s not sure of herself, she’s able to face her fears, and her anxiety, and really power through it to get what needs to be done, done. I also love the cover. I think it’s beautiful, and I really love the whole aesthetic of it. I would love a copy of this book for my collection, to look at, to re read, and of course, let my friends borrow to see if they would like it as much as I did. I think if you like stories about perseverance, a strong young woman who faces her fears, and a very interesting storyline, than this is something you should check out next.

Puppet by Pauline C. Harris Review

Have you thought about Pinocchio lately? Neither have I. But this retelling of the story sheds new light on it, following an orphaned sixteen year old girl who finds herself with superhuman powers, as she’s whisked into a world she would have never been able to imagine, and she’s forced to do things she would never have been able to do in her daily life.

Penelope prefers to be called Pen, because she thinks her full name sounds like an old lady name. She’s had a sad life in an orphanage, wishing for her own family and even pretending that the man running it is her father. She steals to feel something, and then she’s caught, and forced to stay and work there five years after turning eighteen. That is, until Jed and James come into the picture.

Jed is a mad scientist in all senses. His son James, however, is very normal, and seems to be against his fathers experiments. Pen just gets dragged into it all because she just wants a home for herself, and an out of the only world that she knows. The price is that she’ll lose her human strength in exchange for superhuman almost robotic like strength, and eventually, the ability to lie.

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

I never expected this book to be what it was actually about, and when I read the description I was really intrigued. I haven’t read anything like this before, and I was pleasantly surprised. Pen is a really relatable person despite her superhuman strength and speed. And the adventure she’s forced into is really exciting, I didn’t want to stop reading it once I started, and finished it in about a day.

Though this isn’t my absolute favourite book, I didn’t have any problems with it, and all the questions I had were answered by the end of the book. Though I do think that there could have been more explanation for some things, I don’t think it was necessary, and I did really enjoy reading it. If you’re looking for something really different to bring your outside your normal reading routine, then I recommend checking out this book for sure.

Tartarus Volume 1 by Johnnie Christmas & Jack Cole Review

Are you looking for an epic and action packed graphic novel full of mystery and also has characters that speak sign language? Then this is the one you’ll want to check out next. I’ve never read a comic with sign language in it, and now that I have, I don’t know why more don’t have it in their stories. I really enjoyed this. I think the art is beautiful and fits really perfectly, too.

The beginning of the story is kind of a prequel to the rest of it, showing Surka, an impressive and ruthless female warlord who’s determined to make the people she dislikes pay for what they’ve done. She fights her way out of an underground prison, letting out the rest of the prisoners in the process, and causing a massive riot on the planet once they’re out. She’s willing to take down everyone and everything in her path to get to what she wants: a baby. But things don’t always work out how she wants them to.

Turns out, that baby is her daughter. Seventeen years later we see Tilde as a teenager, grown and in the military. It breaks her sick grandmothers heart to see her like that. But there’s a story in there, and she doesn’t expect any of it. After finding out her grandmother isn’t really her grandmother, she’s very confused, and the location she’s in goes into lockdown as she’s been labeled a security threat.

Photo by Free Nature Stock on Pexels.com

Her boss thinks that she can’t be trusted, as she’s part of Surka, someone they wanted gone long ago. He tells her the story of how Tartarus, a mining planet circling the planet Styxx came to be, and that through war and destruction, the Djinn have created insane tech weapons. He wants her to kill herself, but Tilde has other plans. And that’s when the real adventure begins.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, even though my laptop kept dying while I was really starting to get into it, and I had to keep stopping and taking a break. I’m glad I got a chance to read it, and I think that anyone who likes scifi comics full of action and excitement will love this book as much as I did.

Misconception by Christy Hayes is 99 Cents

Been trying to clean my house and schedule my posts for the week and I’m just procrastinating everything before I start my new job tomorrow fml.

Anyways, I picked this book today because it’s only 99 cents, and also because it seems really different in terms of topics based on everything else I read. Published in 2011, this book holds a rating of 3.8 stars across 24 reviews on Goodreads, which is surprising because of how old it is.

It’s description claims that: “When suburban Atlanta stay-at-home mom, Pace Kelly, finds out she’s pregnant three years after her husband Jason’s vasectomy, her once happy marriage is pushed to the breaking point.

“Forced to put his dream of opening his own architecture firm on hold, Jason Kelly tries to get excited about another baby. But a trip to the urologist leaves him staggered. Despite Pace’s insistence that she hasn’t cheated, Jason is left to wonder if his blueblood wife has finally grown tired of his humble background and their middle class lifestyle. Unable to chalk it up to an error, Jason does the unthinkable.

“But the truth he discovers is a heavier burden to carry than the innuendo that was eating him alive. Now the tables are turned and he’s left holding a smoking gun. An innocent wife. A desperate husband. A no-win situation. When the smoke clears, will their marriage survive?”

Doesn’t that sound interesting? I wonder could possibly happen. I like the idea that there’s family drama within a rich family, and that it could tear them apart.
