Book Birthday Review: The Fall Volume 1 by Jared Muralt

Looking for an insane story of the apocalypse due to a virus? Do you want to see kids really have to take things into their own hands in that kind of world? If so, this might be something you want to look into the next time you’re looking for a graphic novel to read. It really shows the gritty parts of a terrifying future fantasy, and that’s just what I love about reading comics. And who knows? You might too.

This book follows a family, a single dad and his two kids. After losing their mother to a virus that sweeps the world and creates a kind of chaos that destroys society as we know it, they’re forced to leave their home, sacrifice their pet, and really fend for themselves not only out in the wilderness, but in a chaotic village full of nasty people. Willing to do what they need to survive, they also end up picking up a baby along the way, and then eventually more people. It really shows the hard parts of life, like trying to live again after losing someone that means so much to you.

I loved this story from the moment I picked it up, and honestly, I knew that I would. I’m just addicted to these kinds of post apocalyptic stories, they’re so interesting and exciting to me. Yes, some parts were hard to read and hurt my heart, but I pushed through and came out clean on the other side. The art work was also a very nice addition, and really matched the story, in my opinion. I couldn’t ask for anything more from it, and I can’t wait to see what happens after this book. It really captured everything perfectly.

20XX Volume 1 by Jonathan Luna & Lauren Keely Review

4/5 Stars 160 pages
Published November 24th 2020 by Image Comics

You know how I feel about books about people with powers, and if you don’t here’s a reminder. I love them most of the time! Especially when there’s something relatable to our own world it. And that’s why I loved this book. Super relatable even now in the midst of a lockdown, the future world that Mer lives in is not only filled with some really interesting tech, but one with a virus that kills most of the people that catch it. If you can live through it, however, you’re really a changed person, quite literally. You have powers, but you’re also completely segregated from the people without. But you’re immune from catching it again.

We see some familiar things, gang violence, daily mask wearing, a girl who just lives with her cat, and it changes to something crazy and really interesting. After learning she has the virus, to almost dying in the hospital, Mer has some big changes coming to her life, and that’s not just losing her job due to her sudden illness. She’s now faced with a choice to join a gang, or just be completely isolated from everyone else. She just wants advice from her cousin, but even that’s not so simple.

This was a really good book, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. It has some action in it, including a lot of really detailed blood and gore at times, but entwined into that is a story of a woman just wanting to fit in and really find herself again. I didn’t want to put it down once I started it. I think that this was a really nice break from the novels I’ve been reading lately, or more like haven’t been reading. It was a breath of fresh air, and it gives me new motivation. If you think you’d be into something like that, I definitely recommend checking it out.

Heart Attack, Vol. 1: Against the Wall by Shawn Kittelsen, Eric Zawadzki, Jon Moisan, Pat Brosseau, Mike Spicer, Michael Garland, Carina Taylor, & Andres Juarez Review

Do you love X-Men just as much as I do? People who have special powers each as unique as they are? What about a world where they’re segregated from the people who don’t have powers and the government demonizes them? Than this book will be perfect for you. Not only do they have their own powers, but occasionally, they can combo their powers together, creating even stronger ones. Don’t expect this book to be completely straightforward though, because there are some crazy twists in the story even I didn’t expect.

At the beginning, we see a young man and woman in an alley, making graffiti. Pretty harmless, right? Well not to everyone. Because special Variant officers come and take them down, treating the one they catch as a hardened criminal, and taking her far away and not letting her see the light of day. She’s missing, and the only person that can help her is Charlie, the young man who was with her, who secretly films the assault on Nona and uploads it for the world to see. But is he doing it for the right reasons?

He then joins up with a team of women who are determined to change the world, and how people see and treat Variants, the people with powers. But it’s going to be  a long road before they get justice, and before the officers even begin to see them as people. But they’re just as much people as anyone else, most of them barely having any powers at all. The world needs to change, and they’re going to do whatever they can to do it.

This book was one that I knew as soon as I started it, I was going to be obsessed with. I love the art, it’s so cartoony and amazing and it just fits the story so well, even the violent parts that aren’t so innocent. I also love the bright colours in this, as a girl with coloured hair, I always love a main character with brightly coloured hair like me. I couldn’t get enough of it. And I can’t wait to check out the next volume. Definitely check it out if you get the chance, and even if you don’t think you would love it, I think you should just try it out. I’m sure you’ll be as obsessed as I am.

Planet Paradise by Jesse Lonergan Review

Not really sure what I was getting myself into, Planet Paradise is a really cute graphic novel, for what the story really is. I loved the art, and really disliked everyone but the main character, but I think that’s the point. Short and sweet, I really enjoyed this book.

Following a person on their way to Planet Paradise with a whole slew of tourists who have also been put to sleep in chambers on a rocket, something goes wrong and it crashes down to a planet inhabited by vicious dinosaurs. They’re forced to fend for themselves and not only save their own life, but also those left alive, including a very unfriendly ship captain. But things aren’t what they seem once everything seems back on it’s way up for our hero.

There isn’t really much to say about this book, it was a nice and chill read despite the story content. I really feel for the main character, and I hope that their vacation goes better for them, as well as the rest of their life. If you’d like something short and unique to fill the gap in your reading list, than you should definitely think about checking this book out.

Dracula, Motherf**ker! by Alex de Campi, & Erica Henderson Review

Need something short and sweet to fill a gap in your reading? Than this is the book you should grab. Bloody, hypnotic and attention grabbing, Dracula, Motherf**ker is really just perfect, in my opinion. I powered through it very quickly, it being only about eighty pages, and I’d love to have a copy of it on my shelf, just to have, you know?

Dracula’s brides have been around for just as long as the big man himself has. Following a corpse photographer, he stumbles on something he’s going to with he never did. The brides are out for blood and revenge, and they won’t let anyone get in their way of their plan, to take Dracula out. After years and years of him using them to steal their power, making him think he wants them and then tossing them aside like they’re nothing, they’re sick of it.

Overall, I thought that the story was short but really interesting and gory. Just what I love in a comic book. I found that the art style was beautifully hypnotic, and perfectly captured the story. I’d love to have this on my bookshelf just so I could look at it again. Even if you don’t like gory comics, I think that you should check this out if you think it’s interesting, because I really loved it.

The Clock by Matt Hawkins, Colleen Doran, Bryan Valenza, & Troy Peteri Review

In a world eerily similar to our own, the people in The Clock are facing a different kind of pandemic in their world, one where a new viral kind of cancer is ravaging the planet. What do you do when millions of people are being killed by an untreatable form of cancer? Well, you can find out for yourself in this mysterious graphic novel.

In this instance, a scientist named Jack is fighting for his life in a completely different way than everyone else in the book. After losing his wife to this viral cancer, his father is left to take care of his young daughter while he works day and night to find out not only why the cancer is happening, and why it seems to have showed up out of nowhere, and why it’s not reacting to treatment. This action packed graphic novel wasn’t my new favourite, but I did enjoy reading it. I liked the parallel’s to our own world right now, even though it took a much darker turn than I hope we ever will.

I also really enjoyed the art in this book. Much more classic comic art than others that I’ve read lately, it was really nice to look at and I think suited the story well. I don’t really have anything bad to say about it, but I just don’t really have anything to rave about it either. I am glad I got the chance to read it, though. If you’re looking for an exciting graphic novel to pick up next, than you might want to give this one a shot.

Tartarus Volume 1 by Johnnie Christmas & Jack Cole Review

Are you looking for an epic and action packed graphic novel full of mystery and also has characters that speak sign language? Then this is the one you’ll want to check out next. I’ve never read a comic with sign language in it, and now that I have, I don’t know why more don’t have it in their stories. I really enjoyed this. I think the art is beautiful and fits really perfectly, too.

The beginning of the story is kind of a prequel to the rest of it, showing Surka, an impressive and ruthless female warlord who’s determined to make the people she dislikes pay for what they’ve done. She fights her way out of an underground prison, letting out the rest of the prisoners in the process, and causing a massive riot on the planet once they’re out. She’s willing to take down everyone and everything in her path to get to what she wants: a baby. But things don’t always work out how she wants them to.

Turns out, that baby is her daughter. Seventeen years later we see Tilde as a teenager, grown and in the military. It breaks her sick grandmothers heart to see her like that. But there’s a story in there, and she doesn’t expect any of it. After finding out her grandmother isn’t really her grandmother, she’s very confused, and the location she’s in goes into lockdown as she’s been labeled a security threat.

Her boss thinks that she can’t be trusted, as she’s part of Surka, someone they wanted gone long ago. He tells her the story of how Tartarus, a mining planet circling the planet Styxx came to be, and that through war and destruction, the Djinn have created insane tech weapons. He wants her to kill herself, but Tilde has other plans. And that’s when the real adventure begins.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, even though my laptop kept dying while I was really starting to get into it, and I had to keep stopping and taking a break. I’m glad I got a chance to read it, and I think that anyone who likes scifi comics full of action and excitement will love this book as much as I did.

Sea of Stars, Vol. 1: Lost in the Wild by Jason Aaron, Dennis Hopeless, Stephen Green, & Rico Renzi Review

Another almost guaranteed amazing read, Sea of Stars is a beautiful and haunting series following a young boy named Kadyn as he survives in space. His dad is looking for him, trying to stay positive, and it’s all he can do to keep up his motivation. Full of vibrant colours and strange creatures, this book sucked me in from the very beginning and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next volume.

This book really stood out to me because I love scifi and things about space. I don’t know what it is, it’s just so interesting and scary at the same time and I can’t get enough of it. This book isn’t an exception to that. The first comic I’ve read all year, I can’t wait to see what else is to come. I love that the colours, the art, and the story just run so well together, I just couldn’t get enough.

Heading back from a job, a father and son run into a little problem. That little probably is actually a huge problem, a space monster destroys their ship and separates the two, sending them off in two different directions, and telling very different stories. The book itself is split into two sides because of it. I loved every page, and I want to get myself a physical copy for my bookshelf.

So if you like space, creatures you’ve never seen before, a broken family that’s desperate to find each other, and just science fiction in general, I know you’re going to love this. Check it out if you get a chance!

November Volume 1 by Matt Fraction, & Elsa Charretier Review

With a very interesting looking cover, this book doesn’t really give any insight to what might be waiting for you on the inside. Following a girl named Dee, she has a bad hip and walks with a cane. One day, she’s sitting in a booth in a local diner, and a man approaches her with a strange request. He wants to pay her $500 a day to do some kind of mysterious work, neither she or the man will get in trouble from it, it’s a win-win.

Who would turn that down? Especially in the financial situation that she’s in, she can’t. So she does it, she makes a routine of it, and she gets her money. The only thing she learns from this, is that money really isn’t everything, and that she is forced to stay in it, unable to simply walk away. She stockpiles her money, waiting for the day she’s able to leave. It doesn’t come in this book, however.

One thing I loved especially was the chain link filler pages when they broke up the individual comics, I thought that was really unique. The story itself is really dark and interesting, but it just wasn’t one of my favourites, I kind of felt lost reading it. The artwork is really unique though, and it’s something you just don’t see in every comic out there. I think the art and the story fit well together, and if you think it’s something you’d like to check out, I’d say go for it! Just because it’s not my favourite, doesn’t mean it can’t be yours.

The Magic Order, Vol. 1 (The Magic Order #1-6) by Mark Millar, & Olivier Coipel Review

4/5 Stars 176 pages
Published April 23rd 2019 by Image Comics

The Magic Order isn’t anything like I expected. A family of magic users that spans generations, The Order is a group sworn to protect the world, and maybe destroy it a little. With breathtaking art, this is a gory and exciting story of trying to keep your family together even when it seems like it’s impossible, in my opinion.

I’m not really sure how to describe the art in this book, but I do know that I want it all over my walls. A haunting and bloody story, my favourite part actually being in the beginning, when a young boy is possessed to stab his warlock father through the head. The world is one of logic and science, and yet full of magic.

I couldn’t put it down once I started it. I think that the art and the story, a man just trying to get his daughter back while his family is hunted by a chaotic group of magic users, really work well together and I’d love to read more of it. If you’re looking for something different and gritty, than this is the graphic novel for you.
