Book Birthday Review: Shadow Service Vol. 1 by Cavan Scott, Corin Howell, Trionna Farrell & Adrian F. Wassel

If you know me, you know will always love a gory graphic novel. And this is definitely one of them. Shadow Service is an addicting book that I really loved checking out. The story was extremely gripping and the art was mind boggling, I really could never have thought of anything like it in a million years. A new twist on magic powers and demon possession, I really couldn’t get enough. I can’t wait to see what the next volume is all about.

Following a girl named Gina, she tries to live her life as what she knows is a witch, with crippling insomnia due to her powers. This entangled with her past makes her life tough, and even her job doesn’t help that out. She hunts down people who have gone missing, and one night on one of her jobs, she finds something that she never expected. Not only a gored dead body, but a man feasting on the remains. After attacking her she finds herself kidnapped and taken to a boy named Hex, who’s actually four hundred years old.

He wants her for her powers. And he’s willing to stop at nothing to force her to help them out with what they need to do. But Gina doesn’t like that at all. Honestly a lot of this book is blood, guts, gore, and Gina running away. And that’s just how I like it. Like I said earlier, this book was so exciting and interesting that I really can’t wait to see what happens in the next volume. I loved the art a lot, especially on the monsters, demons, and gore. I definitely recommend checking it out if you like graphic novels like that!

Review: Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 1 by Gege Akutami

Not something I usually read, this book really caught my eye not only because of the cover, but because of the really impactful description. I mean, how could you say no to a book about a boy turning into a demon curse while also fighting them along the way? I had to check it out! It’s like I didn’t even have a choice. What I didn’t know however, was just how gory a black and white book could be, and really just how strange something like this could be for me to read. That being said, I really did enjoy reading it.

Following a junior high aged boy named Yuji Itadori, it closely depicts his life as he not only joins a new kind of club at his school, but also as he loses his grandfather and basically those two things turn his life upside down. After rescuing his new friends from a curse they accidentally unleashed due to their own lax nature surrounding a demonic object, he learns that the demon is basically hunting them down for said object to eat it and become stronger, so he decides to eat it himself. What he doesn’t know, is that it’s really a one in a million chance that he’ll live through it. But guess what? He does. And now he lives with a demon inside his body, that can take over when he gives it the chance and change his physical appearance and give him crazy powers.

This book was really strange for me, and now even in a bad way. It had be laughing at just how absurd it was and I think that’s really funny. How often does that happen to you? It makes me want to read more books like this, because usually I’m not too keen to jump at things like this. I’m more of a superhero comic kind of girl. But I’ll definitely give more chances out when I see them. If you’re looking for something gory and kind of funny and interesting to read, I definitely recommend checking this out. The art is very simple but impactful, especially for the demonic parts, and like I said at the beginning, it’s really gory at times. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next volume.

Thanks for reading! I love stepping outside of my comfort zone with books, do you? Hope you’re having a great day!

Nicole Fontane thought her demons were buried deep enough.

She was wrong.

A month ago, she and her crew barely escaped an evil cult of magick users and the blood oath they orchestrated—leaving their island vulnerable to further attack.

The Better Day Church is the one place to start ridding Tulare of the evil that plagues it, but the moment Nicole sets foot inside, memories resurface of an ancient religion deeply buried in the Louisiana bayou…along with an eerily familiar altar.

Now she’s forced to relive betrayal, the fight that almost cost her her life, and her demons making themselves known once more.

Her choices are limited: Either she uses her rare form of earth magick to appease the Young family and create a new god…or end up on the altar again.

If she can’t vanquish the demons from her past once and for all, her fate is not the only one on the line.

Angels of Moirai (Angels of Moirai #1) by Nicole Salmond Review

4/5 Stars 370 Pages Published May 3rd 2015

Are you like me and really just craving a book about angels and demons? I don’t know why, but lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about books like Hush, Hush. I just really wanted to read a young adult book about angels, and that’s exactly what this is. However, this is a lot more romance centered than what I expected.

Lila is a senior in high school. Though she’s from a fabulously wealthy self started family, her and her sister are horribly lonely without their parents around, and that’s how their life has been for most of it. She feels like she’ll never be who her parents want her to be, and that they’ll never fully love her because of it. And this is why we find her at the bottom of the pool holding onto a rock at the beginning of the book.

Though her parents always let her and her sister Hayley down, she’s never going to be like that. She focuses on her school and taking care of the house, that is until she starts having these strange waking dreams about an angel. Little does she know that her life is about to change in an insane way. Especially at the end of the book. The angel from her waking dreams is in fact a real person, and he’s transferred to her school for the remainder of the year.

Honestly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I picked this book out for my next read. Full of romance and kind of lacking in any excitement until the last ten percent of the book, I did really enjoy this book because it was something different than what I’ve been reading lately. I wanted a book about angels, and I got one. I’m not usually into slow books like this, but it was a nice relaxing break that I could pick up and put back down, and then pick right back up again. I also enjoyed reading it before bed because of how chill it was.

Again, however, this is another one of those books where the boy is really, really, old and immortal, and the girl is barely eighteen. I can put that aside though, because I can’t believe the insane turn that the end of the book took. I didn’t expect it at all, and if it didn’t happen, I’m not sure I would think about reading the second book in the series. But now? I have to! There’s no discussion about it. I need it in my life.

Overall, if you’re looking for a teen romance book about angels and demons, the angel is named after american singer, song-writer and guitarist James Taylor, and a teenage girl just fighting her way through her classes and contemplating what university to go to, then this is the book for you. I really liked it, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out.

If you’d like a copy, you can grab one here!

Thanks for reading! How do you feel about books about angels? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to chat. Hope you’re doing great and staying safe.

Thrax (Angelbound Origins #4) by Christina Bauer Review

30977955
4/5 Stars 325 pages
Published September 26th 2017 by Monster House Books

The fourth installment in the Angelbound Origins series, Thrax is a mysterious and supernatural story following Myla of course, as she progresses through her life with her one true love, Lincoln. Oh, and she’s pregnant now. You’d think that because of that simple fact, she wouldn’t want to be wanting to fight and tell people off, but of course you’d be wrong. She’s the same old Myla, who we know very well at this point and love. And that’s why I really enjoyed this book.

There’s always a strange supernatural twist to these books, aside from the main plot, and in this one a dark magic version of Lincoln comes through a mirror and not only kidnaps him, but very successfully takes his place in the real world, convincing everyone in the family and the house that Myla is just losing her mind because she’s pregnant.  Which is easy to do when everyone knows she has a wicked temper, and a demonic streak in her. But what they don’t expect

dark clouds in the sky
Photo by Alex Conchillos on Pexels.com

is for her to do anything about it, because of the whole baby situation. And they’re dead wrong. I love her for that.

I’m pretty far into this series now, and I’ve always thought it was very solid in general. The books kind of have the same rhythm to them, Myla being her hot headed self, something bad and new and crazy happens, and then the characters have to work to fix whatever it is, even though it seems hopeless at times. At the end, there’s a big surprise. I really enjoy the books, and getting to know the characters a little more every one. They’re always there for me when I just need something to read that I know is going to be a good time, ahead of time.

If you haven’t read the other books, I would recommend starting from the beginning, because there’s a lot of words that you probably don’t know exactly what they mean, and the characters I think are just better known if you get to know everything about them, you know what I mean? Full of demons and angels and monsters and tons of other things, these books are action packed and just a good time in general. Definitely check it out if you’re looking for something like that. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu Review

Though this book looks like just another cute baking story from the outside, inside it’s actually quite intense. That being said, it does still have adorable art and bright colours, and well, reading it just made me feel good. A story of long lost friends turned lovers, who have to also fight demons with magic. What more could you ask for?

Nova is seemingly an average girl who works at her grandmothers’ bookstore, and although she’s happy to be that person, she’s anything but. Sporting bright blue hearing aids, she’s more than she seems, and is also a witch who knows many crazy spells. One day a woman buys a book, just another normal day, until her friend stops by and tells her that there’s a white wolf staring at her. This changes everything.

Before she can give it another thought, she heads into the forest. Turns out, the wolf is her old friend Tam, who’s a

werewolf. She’s been trying to take down a demon by herself, but cant access her wolf magic, and has been stuck as a wolf for the last month. Isn’t that exciting?

This story is a little more different than most, with the main characters being a witch who’s hard of hearing, and the other a non-binary werewolf. Everyone has their own quirks after all, and it really lead for an interesting story. I especially liked how those things weren’t any kind of big deal for the people around them, especially the magic parts.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out. It was a fast read, and a sweet one at that, and I would love to have a copy for my collection. Definitely check it out if you get the chance, even if you’re not into stories like these! I think this could change your mind, with how cute it is.
