Book Birthday Review: Expiration Date by Mardine Perrins

4/5 Stars 281 pages
Published March 9th 2021 by Kat Biggie Press

A fantastic new twist on a futuristic dystopia, Expiration Date is set in a world that still looks very much like our own, but has long moved past it’s population and non-renewable resources problem, as well as the damage that we’ve caused to the planet. It’s moving in an upward direction and back on track to being a healthy world, and it has very slight tech upgrades, such as hover cars and holograms. That being said, it’s all thanks to something that changed the entire world as soon as they started showing up, expiration dates on every single human being born in the last century, telling the exact date when a person will die.

With expiration dates came mass hysteria, mostly because people didn’t know what they were at first. A blessing and a curse, knowing your exact death date can be a huge challenge. But somehow that scared people off from having an over abundance of children. No one knows where they came from or why, but it alone saved the planet from the kind of certain doom that we face in our own world, in real life. People mostly calmed down, and everything has been evolving since then. That being said, is it moral to know exactly when you and everyone around you will die? It won’t save you from genetic problems, and if you end up being sick, or having dementia, you’re still forced to live with those problems until you pass away.

This story follows two sisters, Elisa and Ashlei, and also a man named Claude, as they deep dive into why exactly there are expiration dates, and if there isn’t something disfunctional going on behind them. After  babies start being born with very short dates, I’m talking less than a week of being born, it really kicks into overdrive to really find out what’s going on. And what the three uncover is despicable, and like nothing they could have ever imagined.

I had a good time reading this book. I thought the plot was very original, and even though the viewpoints of the characters bounced around quite a bit, I didn’t have any problems keeping up. I really enjoyed that we got to see a dystopia in the making, because I think that’s something we rarely get to read about in books like these. If the characters didn’t uncover what was going on, what would have happened to the world? I think it would have turned into one of those dystopias where everyone lives under a dome and people are so heavily regulated that they’re not able to really live. And I thought that was very unique and interesting. The characters were realistic, I had no problems believing that they were smart individuals that could exist outside of the book, and even though it’s not my new favourite, I did enjoy reading it. If you’re into scifi in a world like ours, I think you’ll really enjoy it too.

Review: Complex (Silent Beautiful Universe #1) by A.D. Enderly

4/5 Stars 700 pages
Published November 17th 2020 by Luminary Media

Not usually into books of this length, Complex really blew me away because it was able to completely hold my attention for it’s entirety of 700 pages. Five separate books in one, though not described as that, this was a rollercoaster from start to finish of an epic tale in which a dystopia was ruled by businesses. Which, if you ask me, is actually a very real option for the future, especially in places where they have more power than they should. I don’t know why this hasn’t been written about more often, because I really just find it fascinating, and I can’t get enough. But you know me, I’m obsessed with all things tech, scifi, and dystopia. What more could I ask for? This book is perfect for me.

Described as a story of two sisters Val and Kat, who are left alone after the death of their father in their dystopian world of Legacy, the area just outside of the Arc, a dystopia run by businesses. Though it seems like everything is better and safer, there are just different kinds of threats hiding behind the green grass and order. But this story is so much more than just that. The characters range from very poor, to very wealthy, all having completely different personalities and lives. And each person has their own piece to bring to the perfectly put together puzzle. After Kat is kidnapped in the middle of the night, Val blames herself for not being able to fight off the offenders, but can’t sit around feeling sorry for herself forever. She does what she has to do to get information about her missing sister, including selling her body online for a scummy man who claims he has what she needs. But what she digs herself into is far beyond anyone could have ever guessed would happen.

Photo by Kozymeii Kong on Pexels.com

There’s Trevor, a romantic interest for Val and a very helpful character in the story with his hacking skills and clever way of thinking, Riku, a high up man in the military who just wants to right the wrongs in the world, and hopefully save his friend and her child. There’s Ian, an insanely smart hacker who we don’t get to know very thoroughly but he really ends up helping out in the end, Ray, an assassin with a drug addiction who doesn’t really care about anyone other than the people he’s working for, and Manalo, a sweet old grandfather who just wants to have a purpose for his life again, after the loss of his wife. And there’s a few other characters we get to see the world through, but really all of these characters breath life into this epic and long winded novel. Without their lifelike personalities, I would have lost interest a long time ago, because even though I’m extremely interested in the world that they live in, you need good characters to keep everything moving along at a steady pace. And boy, did it.

I think this book is an amazing mix of dystopian scifi, futuristic tech with the computers inside every single person, and a very intriguing story of what could go wrong when businesses end up taking over for the government. When emergencies happen, like a virus that spreads too quickly and mutates too fast to keep up with, and especially when the computers get too strong for us to handle. When they realize that they want more than just to help, that they want to do. And I loved every moment of it. The end of the book also hints to a series, which I’m very excited to deep dive into once it’s released. With that ending, who wouldn’t be? I’m very glad I got a chance to check it out, and I think that the beautiful cover it has would be welcomed into anyone’s intensive book collection. Honestly, I’d even like a poster of it if that was a thing. It’s just so aesthetically pleasing, and says so much about the book without having to actually say anything. Overall, if you’re a fan of tech, scifi, dystopia’s, and stories of survival no matter what, than I definitely recommend checking this book out.

And here’s an excerpt from the book!

PROLOGUE: Anonymous

I can’t be late.

If I’m late, they won’t let me in. I’ll be disqualified. This is the year  I win. I can’t be disqualified.

I glance in the mirror and adjust my heather gray hood, slide on my  black sunglasses, tug on my gloves, and step out of the car. According to  my navigation system, this vacant house is my destination, and I have  arrived. Eight cars are already here.

The white FOR SALE sign in the lawn gives me some comfort that  we may be safe here, but this annual meeting is risky. Having all of us  in one place tonight could mean revealing our identities to outsiders.  Anonymity is our strongest weapon. We can never lose it.

I glance at the cars, trying to match them to possible members in  my mind. One license plate reads QT PIE. How can we be a secret  organization with our cars on display like this? How can we remain secret  if members refuse to be discreet?

My phone says 9:59 p.m. I throw it in the back seat where it slides  under my AP Physics book. I have to be inside this house by 10:01 p.m.  Forget force, mass, or acceleration. I need to run.

Ten steps. I climb ten more giant steps, sliding into the room as the  clock hand clicks into place.

10:01.

A girl locks the door behind me.

An envelope with my pseudonym written on it is on my chair. I am  the ninth girl to sit down. I resist the urge to sit at the head of the table,  but inside I know this is where I deserve to sit.

One year of effort comes down to this moment. I did my best. Ten  people dropped out of school because of me. No one at this table should  be able to beat that stat.

Last year, tears fell because of me! Terror reigned because of me! Break  ups, friendships lost, hearts broken….all due to me! But will it be enough  to be Number One?

We open our envelopes simultaneously. Three years, I have ranked in  the top five. This is my senior year. There’s no more time to compete. I  want to win. I deserve this victory.

I slide the paper out, trying to avoid eye contact with the other  members in the room knowing they will attack if they sense fear. Sadly,  this envelope contains what I feared:

A Picture.

An envelope with a Picture that does not contain a dime means I  have a new target for the school year. It also means someone in this room  outranks me. It means I am not Number One. Last year’s Number One  did not choose me. She had the final say. I should have had enough votes  to win if everyone voted based on the evidence.

One at a time, we slide our Pictures toward the center of the table.  Strangely, the eighth picture I see looks just like the picture from my envelope. Do we have twins in this year’s mix?

I look in my envelope once more thinking I might have overlooked  my dime. Could Number One have made a mistake and forgotten to put  the coin in my envelope?

I hear the sound of a dime hitting the glass table. The dime is reserved  for Number One.

Number One rises from her seat and walks toward the head of the  table. There are nine heather gray hoods around the table, but only she  wears the bedazzled crown.

I watch her toss the dime on the table. When it lands flat on its side  we are allowed to speak.

Silence is replaced with the sound of nervous chatter. I watch and  listen trying to memorize each voice, height, weight, or any distinguishing  feature like a tattoo or a signature scent. Nine heather gray jogging suits.  No jewelry. No nail polish. Gray gym shoes. Gray socks.

I believe I may know the identity of everyone in this room, but I’d  love to be one hundred percent certain. I have only worked directly with  seven of them. Four years of battling with and against them, but I still  don’t know every member.

“Enough of the whining!” Number One exclaims. “The results are  final. This is a new year. This is a new battle. We don’t have time to fight  one another.”

Chastened, the room quiets instantly. Hesitantly, another member  points to the two pictures that seem to show the same caramel colored  girl with almond eyes and asks, “Are we…changing the rules? I mean,  are we putting two girls on the same target? Or are they identical twins?”

Number One adjusts her black sunglasses.

“No,” she replies with a fake British accent. “Actually, they are triplets.”  She pulls out the Picture from her own envelope, showing the group a  face with an X drawn across it. It’s the same face as the one in my picture,  but the triplet in the picture has dimples.

Number One explains that the person who gets both their target and  this triplet with the deep dimples to drop out of school will wear the  crown. I know that person will be me. I don’t care which member will  rank last, but I will rank first this year even if it is only for a semester.

Book Birthday Review: A Flood of Posies by Tiffany Meuret

5/5 Stars 255 pages
Published February 9th 2021 by Black Spot Books

I have to say before anything else, that this book was so intricate and amazing, and I really didn’t expect it. I definitely thought it would be a good one, a wild ride, but I really just didn’t know what exactly I was getting myself into when I started it. And I’m so thankful I got the chance to read it. This haunting book is something I feel like I will think about for a solid amount of time now that I’ve finished it. It’s horrific and fantastic, but in none of the usual ways. And I’ll explain why.

Following a pair of sisters in 2025 and also in 2026, one ten years older named Doris, and Thea, who jokingly says she was almost named the accident. Their lives are drastically different. Both traumatized by their abusive mother, someone who was obsessed with the image that she presented to the people around her, but not really caring what it took to get to that perfect image, including violence against the two. This lead them to live completely different lives, Doris living with her husband and suffering for her independence after a debilitating car accident, and Thea, an addict living anywhere she can. Everything changes however, when the flood comes. And with it brings the Posies.

Photo by Kristina Nor on Pexels.com

The story rotates between two chapters of before, and two after the flood. It shows both sisters lives, and through these chapters we really get to know each character very intimately and deeply. Easily these two and their mother could be very real people, and there’s no problem believing that. Mixed into that is this fantastically scary world filled with water and death and basically just Thea, or better known as Sestra after the flood, doing what she has to, to survive. This book does an amazing job of describing exactly what it would be like to have to live in the middle of an ocean with no land in sight, and especially no food or water. Starving and dying of thirst, Sestra finds herself on a boat with a man she doesn’t know named Rob, as the two struggle to survive. That’s just the beginning though. Because the Posies are always underneath the surface, just waiting for something to come by. Massive octopus like creatures, they can easily take boats down and crush whatever they can grab a hold of with their tentacles.

Photo by Maria Orlova on Pexels.com

I had a really good time reading this book. As horrific as some of the chapters were, and they really made me scared for them sometimes, I think it did it’s job, and it did it well. This is what I want from a book like this. And I can guarantee that it’ll be something you’re thinking about for a long time after you’ve set it back on your shelf. I think it’s even something I could read again and again, and I very rarely say that. I’d love to have a copy for my own shelf. The breathtaking cover reveals little about what is actually inside the book, and I just really love everything about it. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

Sleepless (Bird of Stone #1) by Tracey Ward Review

5/5 Stars 373 Pages
Published August 12th 2013

After a long break from reading and a depression spell, an amazing book like this was just what I needed. What seems like any other ordinary story of a girl and a boy is actually something beautiful and addicting. Dreams becoming reality, lives being torn apart and rebuilt, and at it’s heart, a story of love and two people finding each other no matter what. And it’s everything I could ever want it to be.

The story follows two people, a girl named Alexia with a sleeping disorder that causes her to slip, or basically teleport herself to wherever she’s dreaming about. After losing her parents, they didn’t die they just decided that they didn’t want her to be apart of their lives at just sixteen, she lives with her older sister who’s deathly worried about her when she wakes up some days to find her missing. Sometimes she’s only gone a night, but sometimes she’s gone for a week, stuck in some frightening city that she’s not familiar with, or even stuck out in the wilderness with nothing but what she’s worn to bed. Good thing she started strapping her phone and some cash to her leg.

Photo by Francesco Ungaro on Pexels.com

The other character is a boy named Nick, who’s come from a military family, and who’s not very close to his mother after deciding he wants to be apart of a very prestigious and important branch of the military, one that saves people and risks their own lives in the process. He’s going through the training for most of the story, but there’s also something different about him. He’s not able to feel fear. The only thing he’s really truly scared of is a nightmare that he has often, one that Alexia also has.

The two find themselves intertwined one day when Alex and her sister are in Florida for a mini vacation, and out of nowhere Nick pops up, clearly drowning from something, but he’s just appeared out of thin air. After that event, they begin to meet in their dreams more often than not, and start to bond. But everything goes even deeper when Alexia tries to dig deep into why she is the way she is, and it’s unlike anything the two could have ever expected.

This story is amazing and exciting and heartfelt. I really couldn’t get enough of it. It’s books like these that really make me want to read 24/7, and after finding out that this is actually a series, I can’t wait until I can get my hands on the next book. The characters are so lifelike despite their obvious differences from our real world, that you could almost believe that they’re real people. The story was gripping and everything I could have hoped for, and more. If you’re looking for something to pull you out of your normal book rut, then I highly recommend checking this out if you get the chance.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

“Have a good night, Dr. McConnell,” Baden held the door for one of their regulars as the woman exited the Dartwood Library and Museum. She was the last patron of the evening. Locking the door behind her, he turned to finish cleaning up

for the night. Returning a few stray books to their homes on the shelves and throwing scraps of paper in the trash was all he had left to do. As he made his way toward one of the tables, his attention was drawn toward a nearby bookshelf. He could hear a voice whispering something. Someone was behind that shelf.

“Hello?” Baden called out. Hearing only more whispering, he headed for the bookshelf, spotting the silhouette of a woman. Wondering how he had missed her before, he turned the corner and said, “I’m sorry but we’re closed for the eve—” His words cut short as he froze in place, staring at the suddenly empty space behind the bookshelf.

“Baden,” a woman chimed from across the room.

“Who’s there?” he called out, spinning on his heals. How had the woman crossed the room so quickly?

“Don’t you remember me, old friend?”

Baden followed the voice into the center of the room and caught the tail of a white cloak that only partially obscured what appeared to be a toga rushing behind another bookshelf. He had finished his rounds through the museum checking for patrons. No one else had been there. He was certain. Now, staring at the strange silhouette gliding behind the shelves, he couldn’t help but think of the Dartwoods. They had been murdered at night in their own home. “This isn’t funny,” he tried to speak with confidence, but it came out as little more than a whimper.

“They’ve finally come,” the voice seemed to be coming from everywhere despite the fact that he could distinctly see her gliding in front of him.

“Who’s come?” He made his way around the shelves to face the woman, but she was gone once more. When no answer came, he closed his eyes. “You’re just tired,” he said to himself, shaking his head, before opening his eyes.

The whispering began again, this time closer. It was right on the other side of the bookshelf he was standing next to. Slowly he turned and saw the silhouette behind the shelf. Inhaling, he placed a weak hand on the spine of the massive text that obstructed his view of her. The whispering was still a constant hum, but he’d have to be quick if he wanted to avoid her disappearing again. Rapidly, he pulled the book out of its place and was met with the weary expression of a frail old woman, her milky eyes boring into him, though he doubted they could see much of anything. “Que susto!” he all but screamed, leaping back. He recognized her. She’d been in his nightmare the night of the murder. Somehow, though, her visage felt more familiar than the simple memory of a dream. He knew her, but he did not know how.

“They are in danger,” the crone hissed in warning, and then she was gone. She hadn’t run away or moved to the side. She had merely vanished.

Placing the book back on the shelf, he buried his face in his hands. There was no way he had seen a woman just disappear in front of him. It was impossible.

Feeling his phone vibrate in his pocket, he jumped. Sighing a laugh, he tried to clear his thoughts. It must have been a hallucination brought on by grief and stress. There was no other explanation. Stilling himself, he pulled his phone out of his pocket and went to finish cleaning up.

Angels of Moirai (Angels of Moirai #1) by Nicole Salmond Review

4/5 Stars 370 Pages Published May 3rd 2015

Are you like me and really just craving a book about angels and demons? I don’t know why, but lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about books like Hush, Hush. I just really wanted to read a young adult book about angels, and that’s exactly what this is. However, this is a lot more romance centered than what I expected.

Lila is a senior in high school. Though she’s from a fabulously wealthy self started family, her and her sister are horribly lonely without their parents around, and that’s how their life has been for most of it. She feels like she’ll never be who her parents want her to be, and that they’ll never fully love her because of it. And this is why we find her at the bottom of the pool holding onto a rock at the beginning of the book.

Though her parents always let her and her sister Hayley down, she’s never going to be like that. She focuses on her school and taking care of the house, that is until she starts having these strange waking dreams about an angel. Little does she know that her life is about to change in an insane way. Especially at the end of the book. The angel from her waking dreams is in fact a real person, and he’s transferred to her school for the remainder of the year.

Photo by Anastasia Zhenina on Pexels.com

Honestly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I picked this book out for my next read. Full of romance and kind of lacking in any excitement until the last ten percent of the book, I did really enjoy this book because it was something different than what I’ve been reading lately. I wanted a book about angels, and I got one. I’m not usually into slow books like this, but it was a nice relaxing break that I could pick up and put back down, and then pick right back up again. I also enjoyed reading it before bed because of how chill it was.

Again, however, this is another one of those books where the boy is really, really, old and immortal, and the girl is barely eighteen. I can put that aside though, because I can’t believe the insane turn that the end of the book took. I didn’t expect it at all, and if it didn’t happen, I’m not sure I would think about reading the second book in the series. But now? I have to! There’s no discussion about it. I need it in my life.

Overall, if you’re looking for a teen romance book about angels and demons, the angel is named after american singer, song-writer and guitarist James Taylor, and a teenage girl just fighting her way through her classes and contemplating what university to go to, then this is the book for you. I really liked it, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out.

If you’d like a copy, you can grab one here!

Exorsisters Volume 1 by Ian Boothby, Gisèle Lagacé, Taylor Esposito & Pete Pantazis Review

42835835
5/5 Stars, 120 pages
Published April 23rd 2019 by Image Comics

Exorsisters Volume 1 is a hilarious and action packed graphic novel following the lives of two sisters, who deal with things that any normal sisters wouldn’t even dream of. After her mother sold her soul, Kate was never the same, but she adds a silly and gory twist to the story that her sister just doesn’t have. The art in this story is just so cute and colourful, yet crisp and gory at the same time. I couldn’t ask for more from this book.

The first issue begins with a wedding that ends in disaster. Glenn and Gloria thought that this would be their day, but really, it’s the day that Glenn is pulled away into hell by chains. This is when we meet the sisters, one of them chugs wine while they listen to the story that Gloria tells them. Apparently, she tried to call the police, and suddenly no one could remember what happened. They all said she got left at the alter.

From the second I started this book, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to put it down. What I didn’t expect, however, was for it to be as funny as it was. I loved every bit of it, and I need a paper copy for myself so that I’ll be able to read it whenever I want. If you need a new graphic novel to read, I highly recommend checking this one out.

Long Lost, Book One by Matthew Erman, & Lisa Sterle Review

41058934
Long Lost, Book One by Matthew Erman, & Lisa Sterle 5/5 Stars 164 pages
Published July 28th 2018 by Scout Comics

When I started “Long Lost”, the first thing I noticed was the art style. And let me just say, that I love it so much. It reminds me of a cute cartoon, but the subject is so dark and disturbing, I just couldn’t get enough of it. Inside this book are two sisters, bound by a dark past. Their mother has been missing for fifteen years, and they’re haunted by the memories they do have by her. They go on the adventure of their life when they get a scary message from something, inviting them to their mother’s fifty fifth birthday party, after stealing one of the sister’s dog.

I couldn’t get enough of this book, and I can’t wait to see what happens in part two. The characters are super realistic, and even though the world around them transforms into something I couldn’t even imagine, good thing the art depicts it perfectly, they’re able to work together and keep each other sane. My favourite character was Frances, because she’s so sweet and likable, and even though the sisters are complete opposites of each other, they seem really good together.

If you’re looking for a scary comic with super relatable characters, this is the one for you. I’m addicted, and I read it in a single sitting. The story and the art just go really well together, and I can’t get enough of it. Definitely check it out if you get the chance, no matter what kind of comics you’re into. You won’t regret it. The book is available here, and here are links to the creator’s Twitter accounts, so you can keep up with them.
