Book Birthday Review: Fire and Cinder (Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #6) by Christina Bauer

Who could have guessed another Fairy Tales of the Magicorum book would be out so soon after the last? Not me! But I’m excited for it nonetheless. I couldn’t wait to see what our heroes would get up to this time, and wasted no time starting it, especially after the events of the last book. If you know me, you know I fully enjoy this series. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a quick read to break up the other books on your schedule, and doesn’t usually disappoint.

Following Elle, Agatha, Alec and Jacoby in this book, we find Elle in her house eating pizza to cope with the loss of her boyfriend, Alec, who’s been transported into a magical gemstone prison by an evil fae. She feels like she can’t control her magic enough to go and save him, but knows she needs to do something, and in the meantime, she needs to take care of herself too. But after that, she accidentally sends herself back in time to see her mom and her in her childhood home. This sets off a chain of events that also sets the pace for the rest of the book.

Agatha, on the other hand, just wants to go back to her normal life but without her mother and sister, before she found out all the things she didn’t know about herself and her ties to the fae world, like the fact that she’s the last of a missing species and the only one who can save their world. She doesn’t mind the new obsession that Jacoby has developed with her, though, she even has started to like having him around. But she would never tell him that, of course.

The boys however are kind of backup characters for this book. I feel like the spotlight is mostly on the girls, occasionally showing what the boys are thinking to help the story move along. I really enjoyed reading this, and the ending! Wow. That’s all I have to say about that, this is a no spoiler review blog after all. But let me tell you, when the action starts, it really all goes down at once. Will he girls be able to save the fae world and the people that they care about? You’ll have to read to find out!

This was a very easy and relaxing read for me, and I really enjoy getting thrown back into this series whenever there’s a new book out. The writing is funny and quirky, lots of silly little jokes tossed in there to liven it up, but when it comes down to it, there really are some important and serious things that happen in this book and those don’t take away from that. I think this was a very nice addition to the series, an I’m hoping for more Bryar Rose appearances in the future, maybe even another book from her point of view. And did I even say anything about how beautiful this cover is? Because I think it’s my favourite for the series so far! Like always I love the characters because of how silly and realistic they are despite their magic abilities and the obvious differences between our worlds, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I Forced a Bot to Write This Book: A.I. Meets B.S. by Keaton Patti Review

I have to be honest, this book was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. And that’s exactly why I loved it. It was so funny and surprising, the things that were written. From tv scripts to fake resumes, life hacks, and everything in between, I know I’m going to be thinking about this book for a while. I’d love a copy just to have, just because it’s so silly I want to show people, you know?

My favourite things in this book were the tv scripts, I think. There were a ton of tv shows done like Friends, Game of Thrones, Spongebob Squarepants, and just so many others. Though my copy of the arc didn’t have any pictures, I just kind of skipped over those because I feel like I couldn’t fully understand them. Usually that problem would have me just not reading the book entirely because it’s not a complete copy, but that didn’t stop me for this. I couldn’t! It’s too silly. I wanted to see what it was all about.

The only thing I would have changed is I honestly wish there were more tv scripts. Maybe some more cartoons would have been funny to read about, like The Simpsons, American Dad, and South Park. But honestly that’s it. I loved the rest of it, and if you’re looking for just something funny to read to break up your usual reading, this is the book for you.

Book Break

Today I thought I would do something a little different, and that’s in between publishing date reviews I would break up the monotony of my blog with some relatable pictures about books. I got this idea from here! So here are five I thought were pretty funny and true.

Thanks for sticking around! I really appreciate anyone who reads my blog even for a moment. Hope you’re having a great day!

Moon Lake by Various Creators (Named Below) Review

5/5 Stars 107 pages
Published September 22nd 2020 by Heavy Metal

I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book, but that didn’t stop me.  Full of hilarious adult humour, nudity, gore, and scifi goodness, Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. If you’re looking for any of that, then you’ll want to grab a copy for yourself.

Beginning with an eccentric intro about how Moon Lake came to being, The Earth being a lonely single mother to her bastard son, The Moon, and his undoing because of being used as a blast shield for years and years from space rocks. How he eventually took his anger out on the planet itself, casting down a chunk of himself and creating what is known today as Moon Lake, an irradiated graveyard of a lake where really weird stuff happens. And that’s just the beginning.

From a sex camp full of people who turn into monkeys, to epic space battles on the moon against aliens, even to a cheerleader that loses her mind after the worst day possible and goes on a killing spree. This book has it all. And it does it all and still is able to stay really funny in the process. Though, it does go up and down. The stories have their own art styles that fit perfectly, and make each story beautifully horrific in their own special ways. I couldn’t ask for anything more from this book, and I’m glad that I got the chance to check it out.

If you’d like to grab a copy for yourself, you can do so here.

Here are all the creators that came together to make this book happen. Sorry I couldn’t fit them all in the title, or track down all of their Twitter accounts.

Brooke Allen, Tommy Castillo, Dan Fogler, James Daly III, Josh Finney, Alex Eckman-Lawn, Brian Holguin, Stefan Hutchinson, Mark Englert, Lizzy John, Dave Lanphear, Blake Leibel, Tim Seeley, Scott Newman, R.H. Stavis, Troy Peteri, Zoey Stevens, and Nick Apalansky.

Get “The Oblivious Billionaire:” A Romantic Comedy About a Forgetful Billionaire (Misbehaving Billionaires #2) by Kristy Tate For Free!

You ever just binge watch Doomsday Preppers three times in a row? Uh, yeah me neither.

Anyways, today’s free book is something a little different: a contemporary romance.

Usually I don’t pick up books like this, but anything about memory loss seems like an interesting book to me, so I thought I would give it a shot. And, it being free, why not check it out?

Published in 2019, it holds a solid 4.25 Stars across 27 reviews on Goodreads. It’s description claims: “How can you know where you’re going if you can’t remember where you’ve been?

43394896._SY475_“Charlie Monson has spent her entire life pining over Kirk Palmer. In fact, she chose to be a nurse just so she could work beside him at Laguna Beach’s Mission Hospital.

“Zach Walden has lost seven years of his life. He can’t remember leaving his football career or creating the Wonder Weight Loss app that has supposedly made him a billionaire. And worse, he can’t remember his fiancee, the beautiful Eva Caron. Retrograde amnesia, it’s just one of the things Zach has to learn to deal with. But all he wants to study is the charming nurse who saved him, Charlie Monson.

“Unfortunately, Zach has a life that includes a cast of friends and foes demanding his attention and he not only has to relearn their names—he also has to come to terms with who he thought he was and who he’s become. Meanwhile, Charlie thinks she’s in love with Dr. Kirk Palmer, but the more time she spends with Zach, the more she learns that maybe she’s the one who needs to wake up and recognize what real love looks like. ”

Doesn’t that sound interesting? I, for one, can’t wait to check it out.

How to Stay Human in a F*cked-Up World: Mindfulness Practices for Real Life by Tim Desmond Review

Do you need a good book to remind you to stay positive and meditate, even if you don’t know how to do that? This is the perfect book for that. With easy to follow chapters and even easier to follow instructions, packed full of relatable content, this book is a funny and reaffirming way to keep your life together when it seems like you cant.

Let me first say, that I love the title for this book. I think it’s something that really appeals to someone like me, who can’t always keep control in the world when things turn sour. It seems really raw and real. The book begins talking about six days after Donald Trump won the election for the President of the United States, when his wife woke up in the middle of the night and ended up having to go to the ER. The cancer she had been fighting for more than a year had spread, and several hours later she emerged from surgery. That day, he had to teach their three year old son not to touch his mom’s tube that she had in her side.

This book taught me that although life is kind of a rollercoaster, the best way to get through it is just to accept that it happens, and you won’t feel this way forever. It gives tips on how to keep your mindfulness and still live your life, and how to meditate if you don’t know how. The sheer magnitude of violence and bad things that happen in the world matter, but you don’t have to let them bring you down in the process of working through them. This book is everyone’s guide to embracing mindfulness and compassion.

Comic Book Idea 1

Michael-Scott-Misquotations-Office-VideoI heard a rumour that the tv show I always put on to have in the background, The Office, is being taken off Netflix soon. Whether or not that’s true, I’ve been watching it and I have an interesting idea.

Someone needs to turn Michael Scott’s movie idea’s into a graphic novel.

ca25068e88bd4a2b038762468bf1d20f

Here’s why. The show is such a big hit, and his movie was such a memorable part of the show, I just think people would love it. Whether it’s cringe worthy embarassment, or hilarious parkour tricks, this book would have everything, and it’s just something  wish I had on my bookshelf.

Anyways, those are just some of my random thoughts. What do you think of my idea? Do you like the show or would you pass completely?

Thanks for reading.

Waiting for Fitz by Spencer Hyde Review

Waiting for Fitz by Spencer Hyde 5/5 Stars 256 pages
Published March 5th 2019 by Shadow Mountain

Are fictional books about real problems like OCD and Schizophrenia just your type? Do you love heartwarming first love tales about teenagers in an inpatient program? Or are you just looking for something sweet and silly to pass the time that deals with real hardships in life? Than “Waiting for Fitz” is a book you may want to check out next.

Following Addie, a seventeen year old girl, it shows her day to day life in first person, with OCD. Though it didn’t used to be this extreme, after her last birthday, she began taking almost four hours to get out of the house, washing her hands over a hundred times a day until they cracked and bled, because of her rituals. Her fears are, that if she doesn’t do everything exactly right, that something horrible will happen to her mom, and dog. It explores her life as she takes a semester off school to join an inpatient program, with other teens battling situations just like hers. That’s where she meets Fitz, a young man trying to work through his Schizophrenia, who seems like a perfect match.

I loved how funny this book was, even when they were dealing with serious topics. There were hardships that the characters went through that I couldn’t even imagine dealing with, but they came out stronger on the other side because of them. The characters were really real, and relatable because of it. I feel like I could know these people in real life and not even know it. I couldn’t put this down once I started it, and I couldn’t ask for more from it. It’s everything I hoped for it to be, and more. Of course, my favourite character was Fitz.

Overall, I definitely think you should pick up this book if any of this jumps out to you, or if you’re just someone looking for your next book to read. The book is available here, and here’s a link to the author’s Twitter, if you’d like to keep up with them.

Burnouts Volume 1 (Burnouts) by Dennis Culver, Geoffo, & Chris Burnham Review

Burnouts Volume 1 (Burnouts) by Dennis Culver, Geoffo, & Chris Burnham 5/5 Stars 144 pages
Published February 26th 2019 by Image Comics

“Burnouts” Volume 1 is so much more than a cute cover. Inside this unique book is a story about a young boy, Andy, and his discovery of not only weed, alcohol and teenage parties, but also of an alien invasion. One day he’s a loner, then next he’s pushed into the world of burnouts, socially misunderstood teens who will save the world one day.

It begins with a few teenagers tormenting an old man. Something I noticed right off the bat, is that this is another one of those books with a character that has hair that’s similar to mind. The art is really interesting, super cartoony but in a different way that it usually is. I think that the art perfectly matches the story.

Though his teachers tell him that a single puff of marijuana will send him spiraling into madness and addiction, he’s not convinced. So when he’s invited to a party later that day, of course he’s going to sneak out, even if his friend doesn’t want him to go. And that’s where he tries smoking for the first time. But it’s nothing like he expected. Immediately, he begins seeing an alien floating around, and it possess another kids body. That’s when the Burnouts decide to bring him into their group.

Basically the Burnouts are the only ones to see the aliens, and they can only see them if they have a good buzz going on. When they see the aliens, they bash them with whatever they have, and even though the rest of the world tells them that they need to lay off the drugs and that the alien invasion isn’t real, they know that they are, and what they’re doing is important.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, and was easily able to devour it in one sitting. If you’re into unique and funny stories about alien invasions, then this is the book for you. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

Cellies, Vol. 1 by Joe Flood, & Davis Stuart II Review

Cellies, Vol. 1 by Joe Flood, & Davis Stuart II 5/5 Stars 128 pages
Published January 15th 2019 by Lion Forge

If you’re looking for the most laid back graphic novel you’ll probably ever read, then Cellies is the book for you. Following a team of tech support and customer service workers at a local strip mall, it shows their everyday live and what they get up to, as well as the lighter side of working with your friends. It’s mainly centered on six characters, Devin, Christian, Parker, Pete and Rey as well as Elena, the newbie.

Beginning with an intricate online video game, Devin is late for work. He forgot about the midnight launch of the newest cell phone on the market, and when he realizes what time it is, he rushes to get ready and get to his job. Outside is a mob of people waiting for their new phones. Unfortunately for them, the phones will have to be delayed for another month, which causes them to break out into a riot out in front of the store.

Not only is this book funny and relatable for anyone reading it, the characters really seem like real people that you’d like to work with. They work, skip work, go to school, worry about their relationships with people, and go on adventures just like anyone would. My favourite character probably would be Elena or Rey, because they’re both really sweet but in their own ways.

Overall there’s many stories in this book, and they’re broken up with mini stories about retail worker’s true nightmares, which I found hilarious. I’m really hoping that there will be a second volume, and if you’re looking for something completely out of the norm from your usual reading routine, I’d say that this is the book for you.

It’s available here, and here’s a link to one of the creator’s Twitter accounts, if you’d like to keep up with him.
