Review: Heavy Vol. 1 by Max Bemis, Eryk Donovan, & Adrian F. Wassel

Do you have a gory and hilarious comic book shaped hole in your life? What about one that’s full of alternate dimensions, purgatory, and a ton of nudity and blood? Than this might be something that you want to check out in the future.

Bill is a man who’s been forced into the role of an assassin, across too many dimensions to count. All because of his diseased wife’s ex, who’s psycho brain decided to murder them one night. He doesn’t want to hurt people, especially kill them, but he does what he does because he has to. They say he’ll eventually be able to make his way up to heaven to see his wife. That is, until everything changes, and he gets a new partner. The man that killed him.

This book is a wild ride from start to finish. Filled with murder, blood, gore, nudity, and lots of funny jokes just tossed in there, the bright colours that the art brings really livens up the story and makes it a joy to read. I think it fits perfectly. I couldn’t ask for more. The story itself was engaging, exciting, and just something I didn’t want to put down. I couldn’t get enough, and I can’t wait for the next volume, that’s for sure. At only 111 pages, it was a breeze to read through. I definitely recommend checking it out if you like any of those things.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book, but that didn’t stop me.  Full of hilarious adult humour, nudity, gore, and scifi goodness, Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. If you’re looking for any of that, then you’ll want to grab a copy for yourself.

Beginning with an eccentric intro about how Moon Lake came to being, The Earth being a lonely single mother to her bastard son, The Moon, and his undoing because of being used as a blast shield for years and years from space rocks. How he eventually took his anger out on the planet itself, casting down a chunk of himself and creating what is known today as Moon Lake, an irradiated graveyard of a lake where really weird stuff happens. And that’s just the beginning.

From a sex camp full of people who turn into monkeys, to epic space battles on the moon against aliens, even to a cheerleader that loses her mind after the worst day possible and goes on a killing spree. This book has it all. And it does it all and still is able to stay really funny in the process. Though, it does go up and down. The stories have their own art styles that fit perfectly, and make each story beautifully horrific in their own special ways. I couldn’t ask for anything more from this book, and I’m glad that I got the chance to check it out.

Ever wonder what happens to child stars of kids shows? Well this is one story. Alexis is a nineteen year old girl who has been squatting in various places since her stardom went down the drain. She’s in a one man metal band, and she’s going to rock the world one day. Or at least, that’s what she wants. She plays a set in a dive bar, and a man named Epic Tom gives her a recording deal under one condition: she joins a teen pop band. She would be crazy to say no, right?

Unfortunately, this is not the life that the universe has planned for her. That night, she decides not to celebrate, but to throw the expensive bottle of champagne off the roof to prove to herself that she’s going to change her ways. What she doesn’t see coming, however, is the cork.

 

This is a supernatural story of ghosts, grim reapers, poltergeists, and ancient magic. Though it’s not something I would usually pick up, the cover and the description really pulled me into it and forced me to give it a chance. Am I glad I did? Absolutely. Was it my new favourite book? No, but it was still a wild ride. If you’re looking for something hilarious and silly, grown up and yet still childish at the same time, than this is the book for you. Alexis is a strong female lead for the story, and I couldn’t have seen anyone else taking her place. The world that she lives in is a little out there at times, but I could easily imagine it. If this is something you think you’d like, I’d say definitely give it a shot!

Babylon Twins by MF Gibson Review

Babylon Twins is a hilariously strange book following a set of twins named El and Clo, who have lived in the forest of an apocalyptic future earth for the past ten years, with their mother and little brother. The story is told through the views of both twins at the same time. El and Clo also have their own secret twin language that they speak throughout most of the story.

 

I have to say, that the cover and description of the book really doesn’t tell you too much about what’s really inside of it. Though the book is really, and I don’t say this lightly, weird, it’s so weird that it just makes me kind of love it. The twins go through their daily life until one day their mother just leaves, leaving them alone without really telling them why. This drives them to try to survive in the forest themselves, until things other than robots begin attacking them. This is when they leave the forest and venture out into the cities around them.

 

This launches the characters into an adventure that almost reminds me of a fever dream, now that I’ve finished it I keep thinking about it like, did that really happen? Full of robots and tentacle monsters and crazy people in general, this book isn’t something I’ll forget about anytime soon. It’s hilarious and kind of cute, and super descriptive in all the right ways. Before the end of the world, the twins were eight years old and fighting kids at school. Now, as eighteen year olds, they have to figure out their live all alone, as almost insane things happen around them, and they’re just trying to figure out what kind of women they need to be.
