Book Review: Thin Space by Jody Casella

After losing his twin brother in a car accident where he was driving, Marsh has completely lost himself in his grief. Obsessed with an old story from an even older neighbour who’s long gone, he finds himself constantly looking for the perfect spot for a “thin space”, or a place where he can cross over to the other side to talk to someone lost to the world. He just wants to talk to him one last time and make things ight. But after wandering around barefoot for months, it’s starting to get cold, and he’s starting to lost hope.

A wonderful and in depth story about a teenage boy trying to deal with a new world without his best friend, his grief, and also his flashbacks to the accident itself, I was instantly hooked. He feels like the accident was his fault, and he wants to be gone from the world. And I think that those are real things that people have to deal with. The only good thing in Marsh’s life now is his new friend Maddie, who’s running from her own past and home life, and who also wants nothing more than to help him and be around him, no matter what. And that just what he needs.

WHat was really great though, in my opinion, was the ending. Completely hit me out of the blue. It was something that I never expected, and added a new layer to just how amazing and unique of a story it really is. Great characters who grow throughout the story, just a really amazing plot, and perfectly written just how I personally like to read, this book is definitely one of my new favorites, and I can’t wait to get a physical copy for my collection. No matter what kind of genre of books you like, I think you should check out this book, and you would like it too!

For Amanda Grey, stopping the all-encompassing Apocalypse fated to plunge our entire existence into never-ending darkness … just kind of sucked. Sure, she had managed to capture every demon set loose on New York City. And yes, she ended up thwarting an evil angel’s plans to destroy humanity. But she also lost her sister, her apartment, and—oh yeah—Amanda Grey totally died and got her soul banished to hell as a result.

Luckily, she’s not the type to take that kind of thing lying down.

AND THEN THERE WERE DRAGONS thrusts Amanda Grey into a whole new world of weird as she ventures out into the fiery wastelands, decrepit cities, and Olive Gardens of the afterlife in search of her sister and her own redemption. As the penultimate entry in the Shades of Hell Series, Amanda will be coming face-to-face with the truth behind the demon Shades, as well as a destiny she sure as hell didn’t ask for.

Pretty Dark Nothing (Pretty Dark Nothing #1) by Heather L. Reid Review

As someone who occasionally has sleeping problems where I stay up for days, this book really called to me. The description was extremely intriguing, claiming that Quinn, a young teenage girl, hasn’t slept a full night in about twenty three days. She’s plagued by shadowy creatures when she does finally sleep, and it started about eighteen months ago when her dad walked out on her and her mother.

The shadows aren’t just scary looking, but they tell her bad things. Taunting her, telling her she’s not good enough, and that her ex boyfriend never liked her. The story is told through the third person viewpoint, and alternates views every other chapter, between Quinn and another teenage boy named Aaron. He doesn’t have the happiest backstory either, after losing his mother and little sister in a car accident that he was present for, he almost lost his life as well. His father is a grief stricken alcoholic, and his little brother does whatever he wants. He’s not ready to be a parent, but he has to be for the sake of his family.

Though this seems like just another teen romance book from the drama that encapsulates the characters, it’s so much more than that. Yes, it has the makings of the those kind of books, but this story has angels, demons, the afterlife, and even death in it. I  really enjoyed getting to know the characters  and their “powers”, if you could call them that, and I had a very easy time picturing them reacting with the world they’re in. This was a book that I got and forgot about, and I wish I would have read it sooner because it’s really an interesting tale.

Alexis vs. the Afterlife (The Alexis McRiott Jams, #1) by Marcus Alexander Hart Review

Ever wonder what happens to child stars of kids shows? Well this is one story. Alexis is a nineteen year old girl who has been squatting in various places since her stardom went down the drain. She’s in a one man metal band, and she’s going to rock the world one day. Or at least, that’s what she wants. She plays a set in a dive bar, and a man named Epic Tom gives her a recording deal under one condition: she joins a teen pop band. She would be crazy to say no, right?

Unfortunately, this is not the life that the universe has planned for her. That night, she decides not to celebrate, but to throw the expensive bottle of champagne off the roof to prove to herself that she’s going to change her ways. What she doesn’t see coming, however, is the cork.

This is a supernatural story of ghosts, grim reapers, poltergeists, and ancient magic. Though it’s not something I would usually pick up, the cover and the description really pulled me into it and forced me to give it a chance. Am I glad I did? Absolutely. Was it my new favourite book? No, but it was still a wild ride. If you’re looking for something hilarious and silly, grown up and yet still childish at the same time, than this is the book for you. Alexis is a strong female lead for the story, and I couldn’t have seen anyone else taking her place. The world that she lives in is a little out there at times, but I could easily imagine it. If this is something you think you’d like, I’d say definitely give it a shot!

Necropolis Pd by Nathan Sumsion Review

Necropolis Pd by Nathan Sumsion 5/5 Stars 412 pages

Do you ever wonder what the afterlife is like? Well this book can give you a little hint of what may be to come. Inside however, isn’t the afterlife you would expect. This one is in a realm of everything that’s been forgotten, filled with the undead, the vampires, ghosts, and maybe even demons. But what would happen if a living person were thrust into this world and expected to continue on living? You’ll just have to check out this book to find out.

Following a man named Jacob Greene in the first person viewpoint, he can’t get the memory of a dead body pinning him to the ground out of his head. It all started three months ago in a series of events that you wouldn’t usually think of leading up to what it does. After hitting the snooze button, he was hit with an unexpected wave of traffic, and in a crazy twist of events ended up taking a shortcut right to a motor vehicle accident. After that, his life was changed forever.

You can’t change the past, and alcohol definitely doesn’t help that. After being hunted down, he finds out that the man following him isn’t trying to hurt him, but actually has a job offer for him. Turns out, he’s the newest member of the Necropolis Police Department, and they need him to help them solve a murder in a city of dead people, where they’re not supposed to be able to die.  There, he meets a floating green girl named Elizabeth Greystone, or more simply known as Ms. Greystone. Before he knows what’s happening, he’s given a gun and a badge and sent on his way.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I began this book, but I knew it was going to be something I liked. Lately I’ve become a big fan of these interesting supernatural police mysteries, when I read the description I just had to check it out. I love how real and gritty Jacob is, he really reacts to things like any of us would, but he definitely makes the best of it and kind of rolls with the punches. I really appreciated that about him, and that’s why I think he’s my favourite character. The world that he’s pushed into is so interesting and unique, I was hoping for an exciting cliff hanger, but I think that it wrapped up really nicely. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this.
