Review: Levius/est Vol. 1 by Haruhisa Nakata

Honestly what really drew me into this book was the description. It depicted an epic arena battle between mechanically enhanced humans, and so that’s what I thought I was getting. What this book really was, however, was a kind of prequel to that, which don’t get me wrong was interesting, but I found it really hard to follow. You ever feel overstimulated? Because that’s how this book made me feel. It just had so much going on all at the same time that I couldn’t really follow any of it.

That being said, I loved the art. Not so cartoony like a lot of the others I’ve read, it was more realistic and I really enjoyed that about it. I think it perfectly captured the robotic parts of the people and had a kind of style that really stood out to me, and matched the story. If only I could have followed the story more closely. From what I got, there’s a boy named Levius who lost his mother really young. Then he flashes forward into some kind of scientific hospital and he’s being held unconscious to heal. There’s another man there Zack who knows him but who knows this other girl more, who’s being held in an artificial environment filled with robotic creatures and landmines so that she can’t escape and kill everyone in there. And then there’s another girl, Natalia, who also knows Levius, but wants to be with him. And they’re all crazy good at fighting. See what I mean? I’m not really one hundred percent sure on anything because I just had such a hard time following it.

I might just be completely lost because it’s the very beginning volume and not everything has been explained, but if the other volumes are like this one, I feel like it might just not be for me. If I get the chance to check out the next one, I might give it a chance just to be sure, but I’m not going to hunt it down. I think if you’re able to get into it more than me you should definitely give it a chance, because it totally could just be me not getting it at all, and I think that the art is worth checking out over anything else.

If you want to read a first person novella with as many monsters and fairy tale creatures jammed into it as possible, than this is the book for you. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this is a book that tells you more about it in the description than the actual story itself does. It’s not for me, but it could be something you like, if you want something quick to read.

Following a person named Hunter, I had a few problems with this book. A few being, I didn’t figure out that that’s their name and not their profession, although it is kind of their profession, until I read the description, I cant tell you where they live, what time period they live in, or even what they look like from reading the story. Because of these reasons, I couldn’t really get into the book.

The story, is so packed full of creatures that I had a hard time keeping up. Again, I couldn’t imagine the characters, but they did what they set out to do, and that is they wanted to find out where a fire came from, and end the problem at the base, which was actually a flaming unicorn. There were a few hints to the fact that they were actually in the present time period, like a reference to ghost rider, and an electronic money deposit system, but those are the only clues I got. I just had a hard time with this.

Overall, I probably will read the other novella’s because they’re so short, and I hope that I like them more. I’m interested to see what happens next, and if you think you’d like this book from the description, tread lightly, and pay extra attention to the book so you don’t get as lost as me. I had to restart it a few times because I just kept feeling like I was missing something.

Tooth and Talon by Alex Hernandez Review

In a world full of genetically modified humans and space ships, fifty eight year old Oya is going to live forever. Or, maybe not. Earth is almost abandoned, and our solar system is just the tip of the iceberg in this new world. Mars is inhabited by Raptors, more commonly referred to as Harpies; people that have altered themselves to have wings and talons.

The beginning of the book shows Oya visiting her one hundred and eighty five year old grandmother on her little island, still living on Earth. Everyone around her has evacuated, but she refuses to give up home that she can return it to it’s former glory. Oya is worried about her, but she seems fine for the most part. Her grandmother turns out to be probably my favourite character in the book, because she just believes in herself and the world so much that she’s almost able to will what she wants into existence, and I want to be like that.

The story itself is exciting, but a little hard to follow. For some reason I felt like I was missing something, like another book beforehand that more thoroughly explained terms, and appearances of things in the story. The third person viewpoint doesn’t bother me, and it’s jumps right into the action, but I get a little lost trying to follow the actual story. I just can’t imagine what’s happening with the characters because I can’t imagine them in general, and there’s a lot of words that I don’t know, that aren’t explained. Overall, though I did enjoy the story and think it was really unique and interesting. I think it has the potential to have a lot of fans.

If you’re looking for something futuristic and somewhat alien, than this is the book for you. It’s available here, and here’s a link to the author’s Twitter, if you’d like to keep up with them.
